It dates from just after the First World War and for me it invokes the sense of a golden age of leisure and luxury \u2013 the start of the roaring 20s.<\/p>\n<p>I was made to think of it as I walked into the foyer of the Marine Hotel, then onwards through the stylishly furnished lobby area to the huge windows offering an incredible view over North Berwick\u2019s famous <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/courses\/top-100-courses\/north-berwick-golf-club-course-review-60518\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/courses\/top-100-courses\/north-berwick-golf-club-course-review-60518\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">West Links<\/a> and out to the rippling Firth of Forth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">History exudes from the walls of the Marine Hotel and the recent works by Marine &amp; Lawn to restore it to its former glories deliver you back to that time of Lady Astor, of swinging parties and sophisticated soirees.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:77.21%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/tjHVwGgTukp4twdNMmcTgZ.jpg\" alt=\"Lady Astor playing golf at North Berwick\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/tjHVwGgTukp4twdNMmcTgZ.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/tjHVwGgTukp4twdNMmcTgZ.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Lady Astor playing golf at North Berwick by Sir John Lavery<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Fergus Bisset)<\/p>\n<p id=\"27cd939f-9902-4901-98c8-bf6cc7f220dd\">I\u2019ve always loved North Berwick and I\u2019ve made a number of trips to the vibrant seaside town over the years, both with the family and, of course, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/courses\/st-andrews-to-north-berwick-by-boat-a-golfing-pilgrimage-inspired-by-the-greats\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.golfmonthly.com\/courses\/st-andrews-to-north-berwick-by-boat-a-golfing-pilgrimage-inspired-by-the-greats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to play golf<\/a>. But I\u2019d never stayed at the Marine.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"27cd939f-9902-4901-98c8-bf6cc7f220dd-1\">I knew it had been one of the great golfing hotels of the 20th century, a grand establishment frequented by the great and good. There\u2019s a great blend of modern comfort and historical touches, think USB charging beside a telephone (with an old-school dial) sitting on a writing bureau.<\/p>\n<p>After a delicious brunch in the lobby. It was time for afternoon activities. Jessie and I parted ways, and I wandered down the back steps of the hotel into the garden, with my clubs on my back.<\/p>\n<p>I had 10 minutes to spare so I made use of the hotel\u2019s own short game practice facility with a real bunker! Of course they have that! What an amazing spot to be.<\/p>\n<p>It was just a five-minute walk round to the first tee and, after a brief chat with professional Martyn Huish, son of the famous North Berwick pro David Huish (who led the 1975 Open Championship through 36-holes,) I went to the tee.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it was by divine plan or merely a series of coincidences, the East Lothian coast seems to have been designed for golf. Since humans cottoned on to this, the number of superb links courses built on the shoreline to the East of Edinburgh has been staggering.<\/p>\n<p>Fans of seaside golf are spoiled for choice. It\u2019s a similar symbiosis to that at St Andrews.<\/p>\n<p>Dating from 1832, the course offers pure links golf. You can glance at the sea on every hole while you find yourself negotiating walls and burns, bumps and hollows.<\/p>\n<p>The stretch from the 13th to the 15th contains some of the course\u2019s most famous holes &#8211; \u201cThe Pit,\u201d \u201cPerfection\u201d and \u201cRedan.\u201d The last of these three, a 192-yard tester to a hugely sloping green, is one of the world\u2019s most copied par-3s.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a hugely memorable course, right down to the driveable last \u2013 watch out for the cars parked down the right-hand side. I narrowly avoided them!<\/p>\n<p>Thoroughly well golfed, I strolled back round to the hotel and had a quick putt on the putting green. There\u2019s a pool, two saunas, two steam rooms and an indoor\/outdoor jacuzzi. It\u2019s superb.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a wide variety of further treatments available. Jessie opted for a massage and it was, to summarise her words, \u201cSo incredibly relaxing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next stop was the Bass Rock bar, which is an ideal place for a post round golfing debrief. If we\u2019d had more time, we could have taken a boat trip out to the Bass Rock to see the gannet colonies there. Next time.<\/p>\n<p>As it was, there was just time for a quick coffee before departing.<\/p>\n<p>What a place. A beautiful town, an incredible hotel fusing history with modern amenities, a historic and fabled golf course on the doorstep (and many others within striking distance), the Marine North Berwick might just be Scotland\u2019s best new, yet old play and stay venue!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There\u2019s a beautiful painting by Sir John Lavery, depicting Lady Astor playing golf at North Berwick.
