Careers are fleeting, contracts can be cut short, and with no union its every fighter for themselves.<\/p>\n
Speak out too loudly and you\u2019re suddenly \u201cdifficult\u201d, \u201chard to work with\u201d, or worse, \u201cnot active enough\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Title shots disappear as deals stall and the phone stops ringing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Unlike athletes in the NFL or NBA, fighters can\u2019t rely on collective bargaining or guaranteed contracts to protect them when they challenge the system.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In a sport that sells toughness above all else, silence is often framed as professionalism and for many, it\u2019s the only way to stay employed.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, if the UFC can continue to get away with this, then why should they change?\u00a0<\/p>\n
There is nothing to gain on their part by introducing contradictory voices in the sport.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The only instrument for change would be a major competitor gaining enough traction to challenge them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Monopoly strengthened<\/p>\n
Sadly, this looks increasingly unlikely as the merging of the second and third largest promotions, PFL and Bellator, seems to have only strengthened the UFC\u2019s monopoly.\u00a0<\/p>\n
There\u2019s no denying that the current model is working for the UFC.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They\u2019ve grown faster and more efficiently than almost any sports organisation in modern history.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But that efficiency comes with a cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n
When one company controls everything, debate becomes theatre rather than actual scrutiny.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As MMA pushes further into the mainstream, the question isn\u2019t whether the UFC can keep telling its own story, it\u2019s whether the sport can afford for it to be the only one that\u2019s heard.<\/p>\n
