More days. More volume. According to CrossFit veteran  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65830335\/noah-ohlsen-crossfit-hyrox-fitness-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65830335\/noah-ohlsen-crossfit-hyrox-fitness-gap\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Noah Ohlsen\" data-node-id=\"2.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Noah Ohlsen<\/a>, that\u2019s often the wrong move.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The 2019 CrossFit Games runner-up argues that dialing back training volume can actually accelerate progress as you get older. Recovery, not relentless grind, becomes the limiting factor, and managing it properly is what keeps strength climbing rather than stalling. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;If you&#8217;re in your 30s, the amount of volume you need to do is less than when you&#8217;re younger,&#8217; Ohlsen told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redbull.com\/au-en\/noah-ohlsen-interview-staying-fit-in-your-thirties-by-doing-less\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.redbull.com\/au-en\/noah-ohlsen-interview-staying-fit-in-your-thirties-by-doing-less\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Red Bull\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Red Bull<\/a>. &#8216;Your body isn&#8217;t going to be able to tolerate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a65072759\/alan-ritchson-reacher-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a65072759\/alan-ritchson-reacher-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"high volume\" data-node-id=\"7.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">high volume<\/a> the way that you could in your 20s. Especially if you want to be competitive, a lot of people get very caught up in looking at the younger guy who&#8217;s training all day. You don&#8217;t need to do that, especially if you spent your 20s putting in a lot of volume. Once you\u2019ve crossed over into your 30s, it\u2019s okay to pull back on the volume.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It&#8217;s the classic &#8216;less is more&#8217; approach. We all know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a64916414\/recovery-tech-is-booming\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a64916414\/recovery-tech-is-booming\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recovery\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recovery<\/a> is a key aspect of training, and ageing means your muscles require more time to repair and come back stronger from sessions. <br data-node-id=\"12.3\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Ohlsen speaks from personal experience. He first appeared at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a26387550\/crossfit-complete-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a26387550\/crossfit-complete-guide\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"CrossFit\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CrossFit<\/a> Games in 2014 in his early 20s, and has competed at the elite-level of the sport for more than a decade. Starting out, he trained as much as possible. Hours were spent improving his technique,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a45970588\/muscle-building-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a45970588\/muscle-building-tips\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\" building muscle\" data-node-id=\"14.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> building muscle<\/a> and getting fitter, but, now he&#8217;s in his mid-30s, he&#8217;s since scaled back his training volume. He still trains with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a62975595\/volume-vs-intensity\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a62975595\/volume-vs-intensity\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"intensity\" data-node-id=\"14.5\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">intensity<\/a>, making every rep and every set count, but he&#8217;s learned to train smarter, having understood the approach that gets him competition-ready.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;I know for myself, I was training six hours a day, every day, for most of my 20s and now that I&#8217;m 34 and I just had a baby, my training volume has gone down significantly, almost to the point where it&#8217;s in maintenance mode,&#8217; he added. &#8216;I built this foundation and now I just have to keep all of those skills sharp. I haven&#8217;t really seen any decrease in my performance. Stay motivated, have fun and you only need to work out maybe an hour or two a day, as long as when you&#8217;re in there, you\u2019re really getting after it.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The Bottom Line<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">This approach makes sense. Research published in <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8294064\/#:~:text=However%2C%20a%20single%20bout%20of,interval%20trainings%20models%20are%20presented.\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8294064\/#:~:text=However%2C%20a%20single%20bout%20of,interval%20trainings%20models%20are%20presented.\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Medicine &amp; Science in Sports &amp; Exercise\" data-node-id=\"20.1.0\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Medicine &amp; Science in Sports &amp; Exercise<\/a> found that a little under an hour of training a week produces the same results as a punishing five-hour routine.
