This week, Vanity Fair published a photo of Karoline \u201cThe Mouthpiece\u201d Leavitt. You know the one. The one where we can see every last detail of her face, including what looks like lip gloss over a pair of seemingly polka-dot lips. Let\u2019s just say that it\u2019s not the kind of portrait one might want to blow up and hang in the living room \u2014 Vanity Fair\u2019s Instagram post<\/a> was filled with comments like \u201cHer makeup artist HATES her,\u201d \u201cjumpscare,\u201d and \u201cdiabolical.\u201d So, what is actually up with her lips?<\/p>\n

I spoke to two board-certified dermatologists and one board-certified plastic surgeon and asked them that question. All of them agreed that they look like bruises and spots of bleeding that happen when \u201ca needle or cannula passes through the delicate blood vessels of the lips,\u201d says dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara. And all of them assured me that based on the look of the lips, it appears she got the injections within a few days of the photo shoot \u2014 possibly even the day before? Maybe she wanted to look extra nice for her close-up, all right? (Leavitt has never admitted to getting filler or commented on the photo but posted some glamour shots instead. <\/a><\/p>\n

Dr. John Diaz, a plastic surgeon, noted that there are \u201cslight irregularities in contour present, which is not ideal.\u201d But because it\u2019s so early in the process, he says it\u2019s hard to tell how her lips will end up. \u201cThe pictures show lips that likely had newly placed filler,\u201d says dermatologist Dr. Lauren Moy. \u201cIt takes a little time for swelling\/bruising and filler to settle.\u201d So there\u2019s no need to freak out and dissolve them just yet, Karoline. Lots has been written about \u201cMar-a-Lago Face,<\/a>\u201d and the overdone <\/a>aesthetic of some who are in Trump\u2019s inner circle. But we don\u2019t body shame in this house. And we\u2019re so happy Karoline Leavitt was able to get her gender-affirming care.<\/p>\n
