{"id":35477,"date":"2025-07-30T23:10:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T23:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/35477\/"},"modified":"2025-07-30T23:10:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T23:10:09","slug":"the-reason-miami-heat-did-not-trade-for-la-lakers-signing-marcus-smart-had-upgrade-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/35477\/","title":{"rendered":"The reason Miami Heat did not trade for LA Lakers signing Marcus Smart, had &#8216;upgrade&#8217; fears"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Miami Heat added an elite scorer in Norman Powell, although they passed up on trading for one of the best defenders in the league because the price was too steep.<\/p>\n<p>With the Eastern Conference as weak and wide-open as ever, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nbaanalysis.net\/tag\/miami-heat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miami Heat<\/a> joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/nbaanalysis.net\/atlanta-hawks-or-orlando-magic-ex-star-gives-verdict-on-who-now-has-the-better-team-after-free-agency\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks<\/a> in putting their foot down and adding win-now talent.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nbaanalysis.net\/norman-powell-felt-betrayed-by-what-la-clippers-told-him-before-trading-him-to-miami-heat\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heat flipped Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love<\/a> for 21.8 PPG scorer Norman Powell, building out a versatile lineup with him, Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, Bam Adebayo, Kel\u2019el Ware, and rookie Kasparas Jaku\u010dionis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the chance to run the East very much in their grasp, Miami showed interest in trading for <a href=\"https:\/\/nbaanalysis.net\/tag\/marcus-smart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marcus Smart<\/a> before the Wizards waived him and he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"941\" height=\"627\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2184463218-941x627.jpg\" alt=\"Miami Heat guards Tyler Herro and Terry Rozier celebrate against the Detroit Pistons\" class=\"wp-image-127572\" \/>Photo by Gregory Shamus\/Getty ImagesHeat looked to build a better backcourt<\/p>\n<p>Before their splashy addition of Powell, the Heat\u2019s two best guards were Herro and <a href=\"https:\/\/nbaanalysis.net\/tag\/terry-rozier\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terry Rozier<\/a>. Neither of them is a great facilitator and defender, although they can both score with volume.<\/p>\n<p>However, in order to build a more well-rounded rotation, the Heat explored swapping Rozier with Smart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSources say Miami has explored the feasibility of trading away veteran guard Terry Rozier this offseason,\u201d wrote Marc Stein on <a href=\"https:\/\/marcstein.substack.com\/p\/monday-best-the-latest-hottest-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Substack<\/a>. \u201c(League insider Jake Fischer) says Miami weighed a Rozier-for-Smart swap but could not reach an organizational consensus on whether such a trade was a clear upgrade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite a <a href=\"https:\/\/nbaanalysis.net\/terry-rozier-speaks-out-on-how-he-feels-about-davion-mitchell-taking-his-spot-on-the-miami-heat\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bad season last year<\/a>, Rozier is a better shooter and scorer than Smart, although Smart is a better facilitator and defender.
