Carney met provincial leaders Thursday to brief them on the talks, which formed part of a broader review of USMCA scheduled for 2026 after US president Donald Trump negotiated the pact with a built\u2011in renegotiation clause.<\/p>\n

Carney said Canada and the US have\u00a0previously been \u201cclose to an agreement\u201d on sector\u2011specific tariff relief covering steel, aluminum and energy, before Trump halted talks in October over an anti\u2011tariff advertisement<\/a> aired in US\u00a0markets by Ontario\u2019s government. Tariffs are taking a toll on certain sectors of Canada’s economy, particularly aluminum, steel, auto and lumber.<\/p>\n

The prime minister said he expects\u00a0those sectoral talks \u201cto now roll into the broader CUSMA negotiation\u201d while leaving the door open to restarting focused discussions. \u201cIf the United States wants to come back on that in those areas, we’re always ready there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Strategic materials and housing affordability in focus<\/p>\n

Canada remains\u00a0one of the most trade\u2011exposed economies in the world, with more than 75% of its exports going to the US, and Canada standing as the top export destination for 36 US states.<\/p>\n
