There’s a new lexicon to learn as F1’s regulations get a reboot for 2026.<\/p>\n

Navigating the world of F1 can be overwhelming, with new phrases, terms, and acronyms popping up all the time. The biggest regulation change in the sport’s history<\/a> has thrown up some more \u2013 but what do they mean, and why do they matter?<\/p>\n

These are the words and terms to know to stay ahead. This is the new language of F1.<\/p>\n

OVERTAKE MODE<\/p>\n

What it does:<\/p>\n

Available when a driver is within one second of the car ahead, Overtake Mode allows extra power to be deployed to help complete a pass.<\/p>\n

Why it matters:<\/p>\n

Replacing DRS, it is a strategic tool that can be used all at once or managed across a lap, rewarding timing and judgement.<\/p>\n

BOOST MODE<\/p>\n

What it does:<\/p>\n

A driver-operated energy deployment tool from the Energy Recovery System (ERS) that delivers maximum power from the engine and battery at the push of a button, anywhere on track.<\/p>\n

Why it matters:<\/p>\n

Boost Mode can be used offensively to attack or defensively to hold position, putting control directly in the driver’s hands.<\/p>\n

ACTIVE AERO<\/p>\n

What it does:<\/p>\n

Adjustable front and rear wing elements switch between Corner and Straight modes in specific high-speed sections.<\/p>\n

Why it matters:<\/p>\n

Active Aero improves grip when needed, such as through corners, and reduces drag on straights, allowing drivers to fully exploit the car’s performance.<\/p>\n

RECHARGE<\/p>\n

What it does:<\/p>\n

Energy is recovered through braking, lifting at the end of straights and even through corners where partial power is used.<\/p>\n

Why it matters:<\/p>\n

Recharging enables drivers to build energy for later use, adding another strategic layer to every lap.<\/p>\n

Here’s\u00a0what’s\u00a0changing for 2026:<\/p>\n

Chassis and\u00a0aerodynamics\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wheelbase reduced by 200mm (to 3400mm), width by 100mm (to 1900mm),\u00a0floor width cut by 150mm and minimum weight down 30kg (to 770kg).<\/p>\n

Overall downforce reduced by ~15-30\u00a0per cent\u00a0from removed ground-effect floor\u00a0tunnels.<\/p>\n

Overall drag reduced by up to 40\u00a0per cent.<\/p>\n

Movable front and rear wings replace Drag Reduction System (DRS) for high\u00a0and low downforce configurations.<\/p>\n

18-inch wheels\u00a0remain, but front tyres are 25mm narrower with rears 30mm narrower.<\/p>\n

Power unit<\/p>\n

Shift to approximately 50 per cent internal combustion (ICE) and 50 per cent electric power.<\/p>\n

MGU-H removed; MGU-K power increased significantly (120kW to 350kW).<\/p>\n

Cars will run on advanced sustainable fuel.<\/p>\n
