There has been some discussion that this fight will not be allowed to be done “properly”.<\/p>\n

That there is a no knock out clause.<\/p>\n

That Anthony Joshua has been told that he needs to keep it going for the full eight rounds.<\/p>\n

It’s a theory that has been rubbished by the fighters and Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn.<\/p>\n

“Firstly, we’d be investigated by the FBI if it was. It would be illegal. This is a professional contest and a sanctioned bout where people are betting on it,” he wrote in a BBC collumn.<\/p>\n

“And do you think I would ever allow AJ to have a script with Jake? A script where we might lose or even hold him up and look bad?<\/p>\n

“No way.”<\/p>\n

There is a quote attributed to five-weight world champion Sugar Ray Leonard but no doubt stated by hundreds of others across the history of this sport that hits to the heart of this question.<\/p>\n

“You don’t play boxing.”<\/p>\n

Jake Paul has made himself into a boxer.<\/p>\n

Is it a game he is playing?<\/p>\n

Using his profile and prestige and money, Paul has essentially devoted himself to the sport and turned himself into a moderately successful novice boxer.<\/p>\n

This is where the game gets serious.<\/p>\n

He has never fought a proper boxer in their prime.<\/p>\n

Anthony Joshua is, perhaps not in his prime, but is still a proper boxer.<\/p>\n

For that reason alone this is a fight that should never have been sanctioned. The British Board of Control said they wouldn’t have touched it with a barge pole.<\/p>\n

The Florida commission saw the dollar signs though and so here we are.<\/p>\n

But let’s not beat around the bush. This is a dangerous prospect. A foolish prospect.<\/p>\n

Too many experienced boxers have been seriously hurt, even died in the ring.<\/p>\n

I don’t think it should be happening.<\/p>\n

Alycia Baumgardner is speaking in the ring now.<\/p>\n

“I gave myself an A+ [tonight],” she said.<\/p>\n

“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster, I did this for my dad.<\/p>\n

“I gave myself an A+ for showing up.<\/p>\n

“I buried by dad last year, and it’s been a tough transition.”<\/p>\n

She credits her opponent’s heart for staying in there with her.<\/p>\n

“I’m not disappointed [I didn’t get the knock out],” she says.<\/p>\n

“It just shows the level of skill. We just did 12 rounds.”<\/p>\n

Baumgardner, behind swelling eyes, says “she didn’t hurt me at all” and that three minutes “suits my style”.<\/p>\n

I have Baumgardner winning that one 116-111.<\/p>\n

I may have been too charitable with one or two of the rounds I gave to Beaudoin, but that was more out of disappointment with what we know from Baumgardner.<\/p>\n

I cannot see Beaudoin getting the knockout she needs to win.<\/p>\n

But there was a right in the last that would have really given Baumgardner reason to be cautious here.<\/p>\n

Good rights from Beaudoin! Baumgardner is in danger of being caught out here.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin knows she has her only chance to win if she can knock her opponent out so she is starting to swing.<\/p>\n

But not enough.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner lands a couple of lefts.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin is powering on and swinging wildly.<\/p>\n

Don’t get me wrong, I have Baumgardner ahead by a mile in this fight.<\/p>\n

But Beaudoin has done really well given how outclassed she was looking through the middle rounds.<\/p>\n

Better from Baumgardner there, with some solid shots that land.<\/p>\n

She’s clearly picking up the pace and lands a couple of jabs and hooks.<\/p>\n

She makes Beaudoin miss and then lands a couple of shots of her own.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner pushes down on the head of Beaudoin as she comes in tight. Fatigue setting in clearly.<\/p>\n

Good long range right there and I think Beaudoin is struggling with that one! They clinch and Baumgardner works the body.<\/p>\n

They clinch in together and Baumgardner works the body hard.<\/p>\n

Good left lands on the head of Beaudoin and you can see the head jolt back.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin is not giving up – she’s really showing tremendous heart here and keeps on coming forward.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin lands a jab as Baumgardner comes in and lands a couple of shots.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin is coming forward and landing some shots – they’re having little effect on Baumgardner though. But they are landing.<\/p>\n

Both women exchange rights.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin is more active.<\/p>\n

Oh there you go, that’s better from Baumgardner, who has been stung a bit by the workrate of the Canadian.<\/p>\n

It’s almost as if Baumgardner needs to prove she can do 12 rounds.<\/p>\n

There’s more activity towards the end of the three minutes but it’s getting a bit scrappy.<\/p>\n

But then it’s Beaudoin who dives in and she gets caught by a Baumgardner left.<\/p>\n

Leading left hook from Baumgardner.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin lands a couple of shots that catch the champion.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin drives Baumgardner to the ropes but they’re told to split.<\/p>\n

Good lefts from Baumgardner.<\/p>\n

She has to be on the defence from Beaudoin’s right, a good shot from the challenger. But she pays for it with some more shots from the champion.<\/p>\n

Good shots from Baumgardner but Beaudoin lands a jab and a left hook too.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner just getting a little bit sloppy out there.<\/p>\n

For one of the first times, a boxer appears to be willing to be out there for a long time rather than a short one.<\/p>\n

That’s a good round for Beaudoin.<\/p>\n

OH! Beaudoin just threw an elbow did she? The referee gives her a stern talking to.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin comes in but she is caught by a right.<\/p>\n

And now she’s caught by a couple more, the challenger wearing shots.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin comes forward.<\/p>\n

But a couple of shots force Beaudoin to cover up.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner goes to the body and then hooks to the head.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin is game, coming forward still and then lands a paddled left hook to Baumgardner’s head, the champion shrugging it off.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner goes to the body – she’s not had much body work so far but she’s coming into it now.<\/p>\n

There’s a shot there from Baumgardner to the head as well.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin comes back with a counter shot but there’s not much in the way of power.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner lands a solid shot.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin comes in with a jagged dart in and tries to work her way into range.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner holds put the jab and lands.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin throws, Baumgardner lands with a counter.<\/p>\n

Good lead right from Baumgardner.<\/p>\n

And another one lands.<\/p>\n

Good two-punch combo from Baumgardner.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin looks like her face as been savaged by a brick wall – but she lands a couple of shots.<\/p>\n

BUT DOWN GOES BEAUDOIN RIGHT ON THE BELL!<\/p>\n

A solid shot from Baumgardner that just wore the Canadian down after the relentless weight of punches that have landed so far.<\/p>\n

It was a compact right hook over the top. Baumgardner was smiling as she threw it and then stood and admired her work.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin douses her face in water in the corner, but will it be enough?<\/p>\n

She is throwing some leather at the moment, Beaudoin, before they clinch.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner dives in and hooks to the body.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin lands with three shots there.<\/p>\n

Good from Beaudoin, a left that lands on Baumgardner.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner has just taken a bit of a step back these last two rounds, the pressure and the threat is still there, but she’s letting her opponent come to her a bit more.<\/p>\n

BANG! There’s the power from Baumgardner, landing to the body with a fierce upper cut.<\/p>\n

And now the workrate increases from the champion, landing at will.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin comes back though with a good shot as well, rapping the head and body.<\/p>\n

Both women land jabs.<\/p>\n

Now Baumgardner gets back in control, forcing Beaudoin back and taking charge of the centre of the ring.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin is the aggressor in this round though despite the ring position.<\/p>\n

They clinch, asked to fight out of it but eventually they’re told to break.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin looks for an overhand right.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner lands a left hook but Beaudoin comes in and lands a couple of shots too.<\/p>\n

In close, Baumgardner comes up with the body shots before they’re told to break.<\/p>\n

The Beaudoin corner is working on that left eye, which looks sore.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner comes in and lands a couple of shots but is worried by the flailing gloves of Beaudoin.<\/p>\n

Good jabbing from Baumgardner.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin is looking to be aggressive but she’s being caught a lot.<\/p>\n

That left eye is looking nasty now, really blowing up as the women exchange shots in the middle of the ring.<\/p>\n

Both women connect in the middle and then Beaudoin is tossed to the ground – not a knockdown.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner looks very much in control but then Beaudoin comes in with a couple of swinging arms.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner is just picking Beaudoin off at the moment as she comes in, keeping the Canadian out of range with those shots.<\/p>\n

Only one of these women looks like they’ve been in a boxing match so far – and it’s not Alycia Baumgardner.<\/p>\n

We’re back underway in the ring, but the Netflix show is keeping a ringside interview going as the women get to work.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner is just holding the centre ground.<\/p>\n

BIG SHOT FROM BAUMGARDNER!<\/p>\n

That’s a good shot from the champion.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin is trying to move but Baumgardner is closing the space perfectly.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin looks like her left eye is swelling, that last shot really found its mark.<\/p>\n

Beaudoin jabs but only against the guard,<\/p>\n

Baumgardner has just eased off the pressure a little and Beaudoin is catching her breath.<\/p>\n

And the Canadian goes back to the jab.<\/p>\n

Good jab and then a right by Beaudoin land, but Baumgardner counters really nicely.<\/p>\n

Baumgardner lands to the head with the right, targeting that reddening left eye.<\/p>\n

Fascinating to see how the women adapt to three minute rounds – women’s bouts are normally all action from the start and that’s where Baumgardner is so dangerous.<\/p>\n
