Since then, the practice has been broken down into two popular versions: mat Pilates vs. reformer Pilates. But which one is a better workout?

Meet the Experts: Mo Wolfe, founder of Evolution Pilates in Port Washington, NY; Portia Page, C.P.T., personal trainer and Balanced Body Educator; and Heather Andersen, certified Pilates instructor and founder of New York Pilates.

There are plenty of pros and cons of the two types of Pilates to consider. Below, instructors and fitness experts explain the differences and provide information to help you choose which method is best for you. (Who knows, you may find that you lean toward both!)

Mat Pilates benefits

Mat Pilates “is the foundation of the entire Pilates method,” explains Mo Wolfe, founder of Evolution Pilates in Port Washington, NY. Unlike workouts with a reformer, which is a spring-loaded board apparatus that helps move you in and out of exercises, therefore making them lower-impact, mat moves require the body to supply all the control, Wolfe explains. With that, it has many benefits, which may include:

Building strength

Mat Pilates builds deep core strength and stability, sharpens body awareness and alignment, and supports mobility and functional fitness needed for daily responsibilities and activities, says Wolfe.

Convenience and accessibility

Simply roll out a mat and get to moving. “The most obvious benefit is that it’s accessible anywhere—the living room, a hotel room, the patch of carpet your dog just vacated,” says Portia Page, C.P.T., personal trainer and Balanced Body Educator. “No equipment needed, or you can use home props such as a hand towel and pillows.” This also makes mat Pilates far more budget-friendly than its reformer counterpart, because an (often pricey) studio membership isn’t required.

Beginner and veteran friendly

“Beginners learn alignment and breathing, and can take it easy. Advanced practitioners can make mat brutally delicious with variations and tempo,” says Page.

Mat Pilates potential downsides

Some of the potential drawbacks to mat Pilates, according to our experts, may include:

Miseducation, if you’re taking a class at home

“The key is making sure you’re taking an actual Pilates class,” says Heather Andersen, certified Pilates instructor and founder of New York Pilates, whether that is in-person or online. “As Pilates has grown in popularity, many other workouts have borrowed Pilates-inspired movements, but true Pilates is one part exercise and one part technique, so it’s less about the exercise itself and more about how you move. The Pilates principles of precision, control, breath, and alignment are essential,” she adds.

Intensity

“Without springs to support or guide movement, people often feel like they’re ‘bad’ at Pilates, when in reality, mat just demands more internal organization and body weight awareness and strength,” says Page. Also, without props or springs to provide tactile resistance, it may take longer to make progress, Wolfe adds.

Modifications can be tricky

People with injuries or particular abilities may benefit from the support and modifications reformers provide. “While you can modify anything, some bodies benefit immensely from the support and adjustability of the reformer carriage, footbar, and straps,” says Page.

Reformer Pilates benefits

Reformer Pilates uses a spring-loaded mat on a sliding carriage to offer both support and resistance, “ultimately making the work more accessible,” says Wolfe. “It’s adaptable for beginners, injury rehab, and advanced movers alike.” Some other benefits may include:

It’s low-impact and adjustable

For beginners, injured people, or those who simply prefer lower-impact exercise, reformer Pilates is a great way to gain strength more comfortably by creating a feeling of “guided” training, Wolfe says. That makes it accessible to people with a wide range of bodies and conditions, Page adds.

More control over movement

In addition to padded impact, the design of the reformer helps users with control, which can build body awareness over time, says Page.

Adaptability

Because the reformer has more bells and whistles, it and its accessories may be used to hyper-customize a workout. “You can make the same exercise rehab-gentle or athlete-intense with just a spring change or footbar adjustment,” says Page.

Instructor-led

From both your instructor and the reformer (assuming you don’t have an in-home machine), you can glean feedback on your form, alignment, and balance, which will help you improve over time, our experts say.

Reformer Pilates potential downsides

There are some obvious and not-so-obvious potential downsides to reformer work:

Studio or equipment required

A Pilates reformer is a pretty significant machine, which is why studio memberships can get costly—they need to be maintained. For the same reasons, in-home equipment is expensive, too.

Beginner supervision is necessary

Although the reformer isn’t as intimidating as it looks, it does require some education to operate safely. “You can’t just jump into a class without some one-on-one instruction,” says Wolfe.

Reformer Pilates vs. mat Pilates: Similarities

Both mat and reformer Pilates build strength, mobility, and better posture, our experts say. That includes improved core strength and flexibility, enhanced mobility, and a mind-body connection. There is also an opportunity for both to be low-impact. They just take different routes to get there, Page says.

Andersen adds: “Both emphasize controlled movement, breath, and precision, which helps create long, balanced strength while reducing strain and supporting longevity.”

Reformer Pilates vs. mat Pilates: Differences

The reality is, the most comprehensive Pilates practice makes room for both mat and reformer. “Joseph Pilates never intended the reformer to stand alone,” says Wolfe. “Being over-reformed leaves gaps in strength and control that mat work and other apparatus naturally fill.”

Go with mat, if…You prefer independence and minimalist exerciseYou prefer at-home exerciseIf you’re looking for something travel-friendly or low-commitmentGo with reformer, if…You want more feedback, support, or modifications in body alignmentYou seek community in fitness or enjoy in-person instructionYou’re looking for variety and a fun change of pace

“Mat and reformer aren’t competitors—they’re collaborators,” says Page. “People get the best results when they use both. Mat teaches you to organize your body. Reformer teaches you to apply that organization under load.”

However, we understand that doing both may not be realistic for your lifestyle (or wallet). So the good news is, both offer impactful workouts.

Related Stories

It wasn’t always a trendy workout class—Pilates is an exercise method founded in the early 20th century by…

[37
49,48,1641,154244,784,407,84,1642,154243
0":"post-356926","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-fitness","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-content-type-how-to-service","11":"tag-contentid-a942ce5a-1f68-433f-95e5-eef77f62a75c","12":"tag-displaytype-standard-article","13":"tag-fitness","14":"tag-health","15":"tag-locale-us","16":"tag-shorttitle-reformer-vs-mat-pilates-which-is-better
["GET
