The German military is investigating why the controversial first verse of the “Deutschlandlied,” or “Song of Germany,”<\/a> was played during a Christmas party in the eastern town of Delitzsch.<\/p>\n

Officials said the first verse of the old Nazi-era anthem, containing the words “Deutschland \u00fcber alles,” was played instead of the official anthem.<\/p>\n

The line “Deutschland \u00fcber alles,” or “Germany above everything,” was part of the anthem’s lyrics but was removed after World War II. The Nazi regime misused the verse to emphasize what they saw as Germany’s superiority over other nations.<\/p>\n

Today, only the third verse, which begins with “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit \/ F\u00fcr das deutsche Vaterland,” meaning “Unity and justice and freedom \/ for the German fatherland,” is used.<\/p>\n

The mix-up happened on December 11 at the Army NCO School, where a civilian DJ played the wrong version. The commander immediately ordered the correct anthem to be played and reported the incident.<\/p>\n

Germany lawmakers in the Bundestag<\/a> have passed legislation which will prohibit people under 18 years old from purchasing nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas.<\/p>\n

The use of the gas as a party drug has become popular in recent years, with its consumption being associated with high health risks, especially for minors.<\/p>\n

Selling the gas online or through vending machines will be banned altogether, with the new rules also applying to the chemicals gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO), chemicals known to be used as date rape drugs when added to drinks.<\/p>\n

The new set of regulations will likely start applying from April 2026.<\/p>\n

A 61-year-old man was handed a jail sentence in Germany after repeatedly drugging his wife, sexually assaulting her and posting documentation of the attacks online.<\/p>\n

The man, named Fernando P. due to Germany’s privacy laws, was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison by a court in the western city of Aachen.<\/p>\n

He was found guilty of aggravated rape and bodily harm, as well as of violating his wife’s intimate privacy for distributing the videos of the assaults, which took place between 2018 and 2024, on the internet.<\/p>\n

The victim’s lawyer praised the court for handling the case sensitively, also giving her client “a voice in this trial.”<\/p>\n

German media compared the case to the Dominique Pelicot trial in France.<\/a><\/p>\n

Germany’s federal states have voted in the Bundesrat<\/a> in\u00a0favor of an amendment to the country’s military service.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As part of the amendment, the German army will be able to collect the data of 18-year-olds for possible military service, while also requiring them to complete a questionnaire\u00a0about whether they would be willing to join the Bundeswehr<\/a>, Germany’s army.<\/p>\n

According to the German government’s decision from November<\/a>, young men will be obliged to go through the process, with conscription itself still being voluntary rather than obligatory.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Should that not provide the Bundeswehr with enough soldiers, the government could turn to compulsory army service for young people to fill the remaining gaps.<\/p>\n

In a letter added to the donation, the homeless person, known as Schwalbe, said he’d like to give single mothers a “more beautiful holiday” through the donations.<\/p>\n

Schwalbe, who lives off collecting bottles and returning them for the\u00a0deposit, said his donation was a gift to God in celebration of Jesus’ upcoming birthday.<\/p>\n

“Some people have too little while some have too much,” Schwalbe said.<\/p>\n

Germany’s employment prospects<\/a> have reached their lowest\u00a0figure since May 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

The ifo Institute’s employment index fell from 92.5 points in November to 91.9 points this month, with one of the main reasons being the prolonged weakness of the manufacturing sector, the institute said.<\/p>\n

“The weak economy is continuing to slow down the labor market,\u201d\u00a0Klaus Wohlrabe, head of surveys at ifo, said in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This comes despite the Friedrich Merz<\/a>-led government’s economic stimulus package.<\/p>\n

While the International Monetary Fund (IMF) foresees an average growth of some 1.5% in Western industrialized countries and Japan, Germany’s economy could only experience a gross domestic product rise of 0.1%, as per an October update.<\/p>\n

A new poll in Germany<\/a> suggests that consumers’ tendency to save rather than spend is at its highest since the 2008 financial crisis.<\/p>\n

According to the pollsters,\u00a0market research company GfK and the N\u00fcrnberg Institute for Market Decisions (NIM), concerns about potential inflation and the ongoing debate in Germany over the future of the country’s retirement funding have contributed to the result.<\/p>\n

NIM expert Rolf B\u00fcrki called the results “not positive news” ahead of the Christmas shopping season, while also expecting the negative trend to go on in the start of 2026.<\/p>\n

Other sectors taken into account apart from retail are services, travel and real estate rentals.<\/p>\n
