The F1 pecking order in 2026 will largely depend on the efficiency of the new power unit, according to former Aston Martin strategy engineer Bernie Collins.<\/p>\n
A major regulation overhaul next year will see changes to both the power unit build and aerodynamic rules.<\/p>\n
The engine changes mark the first time the turbo-hybrid units have been altered since their introduction in 2014, and have invited manufacturers such as Honda and Ford to sign up to the new cycle of regulations.<\/p>\n
The vast modifications to the power units include increased electrification and the removal of the MGU-H component.<\/p>\n
While the changes have generated major uncertainty, Collins has suggested the manufacturers who supply fewer teams will struggle more.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the status quo will change amongst the teams, because it will be someone who will get the engine right and someone who will get the engine wrong,\u201d Collins told Sky F1.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe perception is that the Mercedes engine teams will rise to the top – but we don’t know.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe’ve not compared them against each other, but if nothing else, they’ve got three teams they are supplying, so they’re going to learn a lot faster than Honda, who only supply in one team.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another major change on the grid next year will be the inclusion of Cadillac on the grid as the field expands to 11 teams for the first time since 2016.<\/p>\n
Collins is anticipating the American squad to be in for a rough opening weekend in Australia as it adjusts itself to F1.<\/p>\n
\u201cCadillac is going to be a struggle, to get a new team together, get all the people together to get a car on the grid,\u201d she commented.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had it before in 2016 when Haas joined the grid. In 2016 I remember at that point, I was walking into the track on Friday morning as the Haas guys were walking out of the track to have a shower to go back into the track.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was how much of pain they were in to get a new car on the grid for Australia. So I think for the Cadillac guys, the job can’t be underestimated.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSo if they get that car on the grid in Australia, that will be really good for them.
