{"id":360197,"date":"2025-12-21T18:30:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T18:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/360197\/"},"modified":"2025-12-21T18:30:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T18:30:08","slug":"wnba-players-nearly-unanimous-in-vote-to-authorize-strike-if-necessary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/360197\/","title":{"rendered":"WNBA Players Nearly Unanimous In Vote To Authorize Strike If Necessary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the current CBA set to expire in January, WNBA players overwhelmingly voted to give union leadership the authority to call a strike if negotiations with the league fail to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>PublishedDecember 21, 2025 1:25 PM EST\u2022UpdatedDecember 21, 2025 1:25 PM EST<\/p>\n<p>FacebookTwitterEmailCopy Link<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/category\/wnba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WNBA<\/a> players have voted \u2014 nearly unanimously \u2014 to authorize a strike if collective bargaining agreement negotiations don&#8217;t get across the finish line by the Jan. 9, 2026, deadline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/category\/wnba-players-association\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WNBPA<\/a> announced Thursday that 98% of participating players voted to give the union&#8217;s executive committee the authority to &#8220;call a strike when necessary,&#8221; with 93% participation across the league.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">&#8220;The players have spoken,&#8221; the WNBPA said in a statement. &#8220;Through a decisive vote with historic participation, our membership has authorized the WNBPA\u2019s Executive Committee to call a strike when necessary. The players\u2019 decision is an unavoidable response to the state of negotiations with the WNBA and its teams.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/images.outkick.com\/static.outkick.com\/www.outkick.com\/content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/668\/376\/f19bf1ff-display-media-10.png?ve=1&amp;tl=1\" alt=\"The WNBA Is Growing Fast \u2014 But Is It Fumbling Its Biggest Marketing Opportunity?\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">That vote, however, doesn&#8217;t mean players are walking out tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">&#8220;The players\u2019 vote is neither a call for an immediate strike nor an intention to pursue one,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;Rather, it is an emphatic affirmation of the players\u2019 confidence in their leadership and their unwavering solidarity against ongoing efforts to divide, conquer and undervalue them.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart, a vice president on the WNBPA executive committee, made it clear that talks appear to be headed toward a stalemate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">&#8220;What we\u2019re doing right now isn\u2019t really working,&#8221; Stewart said. &#8220;If they\u2019re not going to budge, we\u2019re going to get to this point where we\u2019re just going to be at a standoff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">&#8220;If we\u2019re not going to be valued the way that we know we should be, in the way that every kind of number situation tells us, then we\u2019re just not going to do something that doesn\u2019t make sense for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The WNBA Responds To Players&#8217; Vote<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Not surprisingly, the league sees things very differently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">&#8220;While we acknowledge the players\u2019 right to authorize a future work stoppage, we strongly disagree with the WNBPA\u2019s characterization of the current state of negotiations, which fundamentally misrepresents the ongoing discussions taking place at the bargaining table,&#8221; the WNBA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/wnba\/2025\/12\/18\/wnba-players-strike-cba-negotiations\/87832375007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">&#8220;It is difficult to understand claims that the league is resistant to change,&#8221; the league added, citing proposed salary increases and &#8220;a new uncapped revenue-sharing model that would ensure continued salary growth tied to revenue growth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">As OutKick previously reported, the WNBA&#8217;s latest proposal is offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/sports\/new-wnba-cba-proposal-1-1-million-max-salary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a max salary of $1.1 million<\/a>, a league minimum salary of more than $220,000 and league average salary of more than $460,000 \u2014 a massive jump from current pay scales.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">But for players, this isn&#8217;t just about a bigger paycheck. With the Jan. 9 deadline looming, Thursday&#8217;s vote turns up the pressure.
