Jewish comedian Amy Schumer was taped<\/a> proudly lighting candles to celebrate the closing days of Hanukkah \u2014 adding that she learned who her \u201creal friends are\u2019\u2019<\/a> after speaking out post-Oct. 7.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stood up and spoke my mind after Oct. 7, I didn\u2019t know I would be such a minority,\u2019\u2019 the native New Yorker, 44, said in the video, which was set to be posted online Sunday as part of an antisemitism campaign <\/a>dubbed #BringOnTheLight.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were like three of us who opened our mouths,\u201d Schumer said.<\/p>\n

Schumer said that she learned who her \u201creal friends are\u201d after speaking out post- Oct. 7. Eighteen<\/p>\n

The funny lady said she was grateful<\/a> that the Hamas-Israel war \u2014 sparked by the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre launched against Israel by the Palestinian terror group \u2014 provided her \u201cclarity\u201d as she found out \u201cwho my real friends are.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnowing the few people who feel that everyone should be equal, it shouldn\u2019t be `except Jews\u2019. It feels like everybody is fighting for everybody\u2019s rights \u2014 except for Jewish people,\u201d she said on the video<\/a>, whose campaign was kicked off with singer Pink.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo every time we gather or we take a moment with our family, every time we light the candle, I feel we\u2019ve won,\u2019\u2019 Schumer said<\/a>. \u201cEnjoying and being proud of being Jews \u2026 I think my ancestors would be proud.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Former Israeli actress Noa Tishby, who organized the campaign<\/a>, rallied Jewish celebrities and allies to light Hanukkah candles together to create Jewish strength and unity. The last day of lighting was Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cJewish pride is the only way to fight antisemitism,\u201d Tishby said in the video during her visit to Schumer\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

The newly slimmed down Schumer also delivered<\/a> some cheeky Borscht Belt lines while discussing the holiday in the footage and eating latkes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Schumer said humor helped her navigate childhood \u2014 and more importantly, helped the Jewish people survive centuries of antisemitism and oppression. Eighteen<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I grew up, there was a lot of antisemitism. My last name is Schumer, they changed it to Jewmer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen things are the absolute worst is when my family is the funniest,\u2019\u2019 said Schumer, who is related to Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we hit rock bottom, we can laugh the hardest.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Amy showed off pictures in the footage of her grandparents \u2014 her grandma in a mink stole and grandpa wearing a dress suit \u2014 catching a show for some laughs in the Catskills when it was known as the Jewish \u201cBorscht Belt\u201d of comedy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how we survive. That\u2019s not unique to me. That\u2019s Jewish character,\u201d Schumer said of the use of humor.<\/p>\n

But Schumer was serious about being a proud Jew \u2014 and standing up for the Jewish people in Israel, the US and across the globe while many others have spewed hatred or have been silent amid the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Her candle-lighting ended the #BringOnTheLight campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmy is a brilliant comedian. and I admire how fierce and unapologetic she is in every aspect of her life,\u2019\u2019 said Tishby, 50.<\/p>\n
