The \u201c60 Minutes\u201d\u00a0segment that CBS News\u2019\u00a0Bari Weiss pulled<\/a> from a Sunday night U.S. broadcast went public on Monday after an unedited version of Sunday\u2019s episode mistakenly aired on the streaming platform of Canada\u2019s Global TV, TheWrap has learned \u2014\u00a0even as the original version aired on TV screens.<\/p>\n

Weiss pulled the \u201cInside CECOT\u201d segment, which promised to unveil the \u201cbrutal and torturous conditions\u201d Venezuelan migrants endured after the Trump administration deported them to a mega prison in El Salvador, hours before its U.S. debut on Sunday over concerns that the story \u201cwasn\u2019t ready\u201d because it lacked on-record administration voices and needed more reporting.<\/p>\n

While CBS News also pulled the fully edited<\/a>, nearly 14-minute segment<\/a>, anchored by correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi and produced by Oriana Zill de Granados, from its international partners, the unaired version appeared to air on the show\u2019s Canadian distributor Global TV\u2019 streaming platform.<\/p>\n

Clips of the segment circulated online on Monday.<\/p>\n

In it, Alfonsi said she interviewed multiple men about the \u201ctorture, sexual and physical abuse\u201d and \u201cfour months of hell\u201d\u00a0they endured after their deportation from the U.S. to El Salvador\u2019s Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT. Alfonsi also walked through a report from the nonprofit group Human Rights Watch and spoke to the director of UC Berkeley\u2019s Human Rights Center Investigations Lab.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was blood everywhere, screams, people crying, people who couldn\u2019t take it and were urinating and vomiting on themselves,\u201d Luis Munoz Pinto, a college student in Venezuela who sought asylum, told Alfonsi about his experience after he was forcibly removed from the U.S.<\/p>\n

Alfonsi noted that the Department of Homeland Security declined a request for an interview \u201cand referred our questions to El Salvador.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government there did not respond to our request,\u201d\u00a0Alfonsi said.<\/p>\n

According to Axios<\/a>, \u201ca source familiar with \u201960 Minutes\u2019 correspondence with the administration\u201d said CBS News did receive comments from \u201cthe White House, State Department and DHS.\u201d<\/p>\n

CBS News did not respond to an immediate request for comment on the aired segment and what specific issues existed with the edited version. Paramount, CBS News\u2019\u00a0parent company, has pulled the segment from YouTube accounts on copyright grounds.<\/p>\n

Alfonsi told \u201c60 Minutes\u201d\u00a0colleagues on Sunday that the federal agencies she reached out to declined to comment, making Weiss\u2019 choice \u201cnot an editorial decision\u201d\u00a0but \u201ca political one.\u201d \u201c60 Minutes\u201d executive producer Tanya Simon told<\/a> staffers on Monday that Weiss \u201chad a different vision for how the piece should be\u201d\u00a0despite its clearing by the network\u2019s standards department and lawyers.<\/p>\n

Critics have<\/a> accused<\/a> Weiss and David Ellison, Paramount\u2019s CEO, of making the decision to appease President Donald Trump, who last week said \u201c60 Minutes\u201d has treated him \u201cfar worse\u201c under Ellison\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

Ellison, who appointed Weiss as CBS News\u2019\u00a0top editor in October upon his $150 million purchase of the Free Press, will need federal regulatory approval for his company\u2019s hostile takeover bid of Warner Bros. Discovery.<\/p>\n

Weiss and CBS News have said<\/a> the network still intends to air the segment, and she said to staffers during an editorial call on Monday that it featured \u201cvery powerful testimony of abuse at CECOT.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut that testimony has already been reported on by places like the Times,\u201d Weiss said. \u201cThe public knows that Venezuelans have been subjected to horrific treatment in this prison. So to run a story on this subject, two months later, we simply need to do more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHolding stories that aren\u2019t ready for whatever reason\u2014that they lack sufficient context, say, or that they are missing critical voices\u2014happens every day in every newsroom,\u201d\u00a0she continued. \u201cI look forward to airing this important piece when it\u2019s ready.\u201d<\/p>\n
