Javier Báez celebrates after his a two-run home run against the Seattle Mariners during the sixth inning of game four of the American League Division Series at Comerica Park on October 08, 2025.

Detroit Tigers star Javier Báez isn’t just making headlines on the baseball diamond; he’s taking his impact off the field to new heights. Báez recently announced that his nonprofit, the El Mago Foundation, will host its first annual charity golf tournament on January 22 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The event, unveiled via Báez’s Instagram, aims to bring together sponsors, community partners and supporters to raise funds for youth development and health programs throughout Puerto Rico.

After a season defined by ups and downs, Báez appears fully committed to using his platform to uplift the community. Known for his energetic play and charismatic personality, the 33-year-old infielder is turning that same fire into philanthropy, leveraging his status to shine a light on causes he cares deeply about. With the inaugural golf event just weeks away, anticipation is building among fans and supporters alike.

From Tiger to Community Champion

Báez’s 2025 season with the Tigers mirrored much of the team’s roller-coaster campaign. After the team’s strong first half and play that earned him an All-Star appearance, the Tigers lost to the Seattle Mariners in Game 5 of the 2025 ALDS by a 3-2 score in 15 innings, ending Detroit’s postseason run. Despite that, Báez’s veteran presence and October performance–including a .313 average and clutch defense–were bright spots for a young Tigers roster.

Off the field, however, Báez has consistently worked to make a meaningful impact beyond baseball. He established the El Mago Foundation with a focus on supporting youth sports development and health initiatives in his native Puerto Rico, where access to athletic resources and health services can be limited in underserved areas. The foundation’s work includes funding programs that create opportunities for young athletes, encourage healthy lifestyles, and foster community engagement.

Báez’s decision to host a charity golf tournament reflects both his personal interests and a savvy approach to fundraising. Golf events have long served as a cornerstone for charitable efforts, bringing together business leaders, professional athletes, and fans in a relaxed yet competitive setting that maximizes both awareness and donations. For Báez, this format provides a fresh platform to elevate the foundation’s mission while engaging a broader audience.

Details of the Inaugural Tournament

Scheduled for mid-January, the first annual El Mago Foundation golf tournament promises to be a marquee event on Puerto Rico’s offseason sports calendar. The Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve, a luxury resort known for its scenic courses and challenging layouts, will host golfers and guests, offering an experience that blends competition with community impact.

Báez’s announcement emphasized that every contribution and moment from the event will support the foundation’s ongoing projects. Sponsors, allies, and community members are invited to participate not just for sport, but to directly contribute to initiatives that improve the lives of young people and families across the region. Organizers are expected to include on-course contests, hospitality areas, and opportunities to meet Báez and other special guests.

While specific fundraising goals have not yet been disclosed, early interest suggests the tournament could become an annual highlight that drives significant support for youth and health programs– especially if Báez’s celebrity and competitive spirit draw players from across the baseball and golf communities.

Alyssa Polczynski Alyssa Polczynski is a multimedia journalist covering Major League Baseball for Heavy.com.
