{"id":363694,"date":"2025-12-23T11:48:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T11:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/363694\/"},"modified":"2025-12-23T11:48:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T11:48:09","slug":"eating-nuts-linked-to-fewer-cravings-for-sweets-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/363694\/","title":{"rendered":"Eating Nuts Linked to Fewer Cravings for Sweets, Study Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pouring-nuts-hand-1296x728-header.jpg\" alt=\"Nuts being poured out of mason jar\" class=\"css-1jytyml\"\/><a class=\"icon-hl-pinterest css-1dn5h5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-event=\"Any Page|Image Pinterest Click|Icon Clicked\" data-element-event=\"OPEN|CONTENTBLOCK|Any Page|Article Body|BUTTON|Image Widget Pinterest Click|\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/create\/button\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.healthline.com%2Fhealth-news%2Fnuts-reduce-cravings-promote-weight-management&amp;media=https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.post.rvohealth.io%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F12%2Fpouring-nuts-hand-1296x728-header.jpg&amp;description=Eating%20Nuts%20Linked%20to%20Fewer%20Cravings%20for%20Sweets%2C%20Study%20Finds\" title=\"Share on Pinterest\" data-pin-custom=\"true\" data-share-url=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pouring-nuts-hand-1296x728-header.jpg\">Share on Pinterest<\/a>Young adults with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome may benefit from eating nuts, researchers say. fcafotodigital\/Getty ImagesA new study suggests that swapping high carb snacks for nuts can help curb sweet cravings.Participants at risk for metabolic syndrome who made the switch also tended to increase their protein intake.Nuts are high in satiating nutrients like healthy fats, protein, and fiber.If you\u2019re allergic to tree nuts, seeds can make a good substitute.<\/p>\n<p>Swapping your usual between-meal snacks for a handful of mixed tree nuts could help cut cravings for sweets and fast food and improve the overall quality of your diet. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to a new study published on December 2 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/17\/23\/3778\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Nutrients<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that young adults at higher risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/metabolic-syndrome\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">metabolic syndrome<\/a> who snacked on nuts daily for 16 weeks reported fewer urges for sugary and salty treats, ate more protein-rich foods, and scored better on a measure of diet quality.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know about the metabolic health benefits of nut consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The research team at Vanderbilt University Medical Center recruited 84 males and females between the ages of 22 and 36. <\/p>\n<p>To qualify, participants had to have maintained a stable weight for at least three months and fall within a specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/body-mass-index\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">body mass index (BMI)<\/a> range. <\/p>\n<p>Those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/allergies\/nut-allergy-symptoms\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nut allergies<\/a>, chronic diseases like diabetes, or certain lifestyle factors such as smoking were excluded.<\/p>\n<p>Before the main part of the trial began, everyone went through a two-week \u201crun-in\u201d period, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/balanced-diet\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eating a balanced diet<\/a> that included typical high-carbohydrate snacks but no nuts. <\/p>\n<p>After that, participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups:<\/p>\n<p>Both snack types were similar in calories, protein, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/food-nutrition\/fiber-diet-good-for-gut-and-health\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fiber<\/a>, and sodium, and were eaten between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. <\/p>\n<p>Participants met with registered dietitians every two weeks to receive counseling and their pre-portioned snacks.<\/p>\n<p>The study lasted 16 weeks, during which researchers measured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/11-ways-to-stop-food-cravings\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food cravings<\/a>, daily food intake, and overall diet quality at both the start and end. They also collected blood samples to look at hormones related to appetite.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the study, the nut-snacking group showed notable changes in their eating habits and cravings.<\/p>\n<p>Participants who ate tree nuts reported:<\/p>\n<p>Less craving for sweets and fast food: Ratings for cravings dropped for items like cookies, brownies, donuts, candy, ice cream, chips, and pizza. For example, cravings for brownies fell by nearly half a point on a five-point scale, and cravings for cookies dropped by more than 0.6 points.Reduced preference for sweet taste: About 12.5% fewer people in the nut group said they preferred sweet flavors compared to at the start of the study.Eating fewer sugary and salty snacks: The frequency of eating frozen desserts and salty snacks went down.Eating more protein-rich foods: On average, they increased their daily servings of protein foods, especially from seafood and plant-based sources, by more than four servings.<\/p>\n<p>These changes were linked to shifts in certain appetite-related hormones. <\/p>\n<p>In the nut group, levels of GLP-1 \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/ghrelin\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hormone<\/a> that can help regulate appetite \u2014 increased, and this rise was associated with reduced cravings for cakes, brownies, candy, and ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the nut group\u2019s overall score on the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), which measures how well a person\u2019s diet aligns with national dietary guidelines, improved by 19%. This bump reflected a higher intake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/food-nutrition\/saturated-and-unsaturated-fat\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">healthy unsaturated fats<\/a> and protein-rich foods, as well as a lower intake of sodium and refined grains.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the high-carbohydrate snack group did not see significant changes in food cravings or diet quality. In fact, they showed a small decrease in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/best-low-sugar-fruits\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fruit consumption<\/a>, an increase in daily calorie intake of approximately 350 calories, and an average weight gain of roughly 0.8 kilograms (about 1.8 pounds) over the 16-week period.<\/p>\n<p>The nut group, on the other hand, did not gain weight, even though they were eating calorie-dense snacks. While they ate about 468 grams less total food by weight each day, their overall calorie intake stayed about the same. Hunger and fullness ratings did not change significantly in the nut group, suggesting they felt just as satisfied as before.<\/p>\n<p>The findings suggest that replacing typical snack foods with a modest portion of mixed tree nuts may help young adults at risk for metabolic syndrome steer away from less healthy foods and make choices that improve the overall quality of their diets, without unwanted weight gain.<\/p>\n<p>Kezia Joy, a registered dietitian and medical advisor with <a href=\"https:\/\/welzo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Welzo<\/a>, noted that replacing higher-carbohydrate snack foods with nuts can help reduce cravings due to the balanced nutrients within nuts. Joy wasn\u2019t involved in the new study.<\/p>\n<p>They contain a high amount of fat, protein, and fiber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe slow digestion of these nutrients creates steady blood sugar and enhances feelings of being satisfied for longer periods,\u201d she told Healthline.<\/p>\n<p>Joy additionally noted that eating nuts helps regulate blood sugar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteady blood sugars are associated with fewer or no fluctuations in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/14-ways-to-lower-blood-sugar\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blood glucose<\/a> (spikes [and] drops), and the less frequent the spikes and dips, the less likely your body is to send signals of \u2018urgent\u2019 need for energy via hunger\/cravings,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Joy concluded by saying that chewing nuts also requires more time and effort relative to other foods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]his additional time, along with providing a greater feeling of fullness, contributes to enhanced satisfaction post-meal and supports better long-term appetite regulation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sacredheart.elsevierpure.com\/en\/persons\/jacqueline-a-vernarelli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Jacqueline A.
