With the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> entering play in last place in the NHL\u2019s Eastern Conference, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving met the media before the Leafs played host to the Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Treliving was quick to put his support behind head coach Craig Berube<\/a>, with the team sitting at 15-15-5.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to make it clear, I support Craig fully,\u201d said Treliving. \u201cOne of the narratives coming out is there is a disconnect between the coach and I. There isn\u2019t a disconnect. We all have to be better. We all recognize that. But I think we\u2019ve got a real good coach.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not to say we don\u2019t change some things, tweak some things,\u201d added the general manager. \u201cWhen you get in these situations you have to band together and you look for collective solutions and that\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also addressed the firing of assistant coach Marc Savard<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are never fun decisions to make,\u201d said Treliving. \u201cThe decision yesterday is not putting the blame at Marc\u2019s feet. We\u2019ve gone through a stretch here specifically on the power-play\u2026.we just felt we needed to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toronto\u2019s power play sits last in the NHL at 13.1 per cent.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, the players have a responsibility and that doesn\u2019t absolve anybody,\u201d added Treliving who says the power play will be run by the current coaching staff..<\/p>\n

Berube wouldn\u2019t confirm that assistant coach Derek Lalonde will have the lead on the PP saying, \u201cIt\u2019s a team. It\u2019s a staff will look at the power play.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see where we go moving forward, whether that\u2019s something that we handle internally or make an addition to our staff here externally,\u201d noted Treliving.<\/p>\n

Savard was hired in June of 2024 and was in charge of a power play that clicked at 24.8 per cent last sseason, which was good for ninth in the NHL.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s tough,\u201d said Berube. \u201c[Savard] is a good friend. I\u2019ve known him a long time. It\u2019s always hard when you lose somebody and things change. But we didn\u2019t perform well enough. Ultimately, it\u2019s on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an area that cost us points in the standings,\u201d added Treliving.<\/p>\n

\u201cResults are what it\u2019s all about and definitely wasn\u2019t enough results,\u201d added Berube. \u201cTre and I talked and we made a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the news conference, Treliving was asked if captain Auston Matthews<\/a> has asked for a trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Auston has not asked for a trade. No\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthews enters play today with 14 goals (tied for 36th in the NHL) and 23 points (109th in the league scoring) in 30 games this season.<\/p>\n

On the topic of trades, Treliving made it clear he has not given up on this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019re turning the page right now on the season,\u201d said Treliving. \u201cYou continue to monitor your team. You are having discussions with different teams. We are not here waving a white flag.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you can find somewhere to help your team from bringing a player in or making a deal, obviously that\u2019s what you look to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy job is to continue to talk and see if there\u2019s things out there that can help us and that doesn\u2019t change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Berube surprised the assembled media before the game announcing that defenceman Chris Tanev<\/a> would return to the lineup to face the Penguins on Tuesday for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury against the Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> on Nov. 1.<\/p>\n

Tanev, 36, has missed 23 games after an awkward fall after taking a hit from Flyers forward Matvei Michkov<\/a>. He left the ice on a stretcher.<\/p>\n

The 6-foot-3 right-shot blueliner has spent the last few weeks skating with the club wearing a non-contact red jersey during his on-ice sessions. <\/p>\n

So what led to the decision to dress him today?<\/p>\n
