{"id":365543,"date":"2025-12-24T08:05:33","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T08:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/365543\/"},"modified":"2025-12-24T08:05:33","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T08:05:33","slug":"cease-and-desist-letter-served-to-ring-of-fire-mining-company-by-neskantaga-first-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/365543\/","title":{"rendered":"Cease-and-desist letter served to Ring of Fire mining company by Neskantaga First Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Neskantaga First Nation\u2019s youngest band councillor, Lashaunda Waswa says she wants to inspire the next generation to protect the community\u2019s land, water and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why she joined seven others from the remote Ojibway community on Tuesday for a snowmobile trip to a mining exploration camp on their traditional territory \u2014 located in the heart of the Ring of Fire region.<\/p>\n<p>There, they served the workers a cease-and-desist letter, with the goal of halting all exploration activities in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandmother&#8217;s trapline is actually not too far from where the mining camp is, which is very concerning,\u201d said 21-year-old Waswa. \u201cIt actually broke me a little inside to know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ring of Fire is a crescent-shaped mineral deposit in the James Bay lowlands that\u2019s been eyed by Ontario Premier Doug Ford as a critical asset in the trade war between Canada and the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>While mining has yet to be approved there, efforts to connect the remote area to the provincial highway network have escalated in recent months, with the province signing $40-million deals with both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/thunder-bay\/marten-falls-first-nation-agreement-9.6995151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Marten Falls<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/thunder-bay\/webequie-first-nation-agreement-9.6958739\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Webequie First Nations<\/a> to support road construction through their territories to reach the Ring of Fire, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/thunder-bay\/ont-ring-of-fire-1.7630060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$62-million deal with the Municipality of Greenstone.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A person wearing glasses and a dark-coloured hoodie is seen standing outside in a snowy place.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766563533_860_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Lashaunda Waswa, Neskantaga First Nation&#8217;s youngest band councillor, is seen in this photo taken in Thunder Bay, Ont., on Wednesday. (Sarah Law\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/thunder-bay\/bill-5-northwestern-ontario-response-1.7541316\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">several other First Nations<\/a>, including Neskantaga, have pushed back against development projects, citing concerns about recent legislation which aims to fast-track approvals, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/thunder-bay\/bill-5-rally-thunder-bay-1.7560229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bill 5<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/frontier-lithium-project-northwestern-ontario-9.6959208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">One Project, One Process Framework.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Waswa says her family taught her about the land\u2019s significance, where they would hunt, fish and carry out traditional teachings and practices.<\/p>\n<p>Once she became more involved in discussions about the Ring of Fire, \u201cit really opened my eyes to how much I really want to protect those lands,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The exploration camp is run by PTX Metals Inc. for the company\u2019s proposed W2 Project, which is targeting copper-nickel, platinum group elements, gold and cobalt.<\/p>\n<p>LISTEN | First Nation serves mining company in Ring of Fire with cease and desist:<\/p>\n<p>7:10First Nation serves mining company in Ring of Fire with cease and desist<\/p>\n<p>Neskantaga First Nation has served a cease and desist letter to a mining company in the Ring of Fire region. Sarah Law joined Jonathan to talk about the First Nation\u2019s concerns as the push for development in northern Ontario continues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Neskantaga\u2019s Chief Gary Quisses, his First Nation never consented to the exploration activities taking place, which he says have escalated in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never gave you permission to come and take our resources, test our resources, what we have,\u201d he told CBC News, recalling his message to the workers at the camp. \u201cThat&#8217;s our harvesting area, our home and ancestral lands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neskantaga\u2019s action comes ahead of two major developments anticipated on Thursday:<\/p>\n<p>Mining company, province respond<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for PTX Metals Inc. provided an emailed statement to CBC News on Wednesday, saying exploration is in the early stages and that it\u2019s received all the required permits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As well, they say the company respects and values its relationships with First Nations and \u201chas worked productively and collaboratively with local communities over the past four years, involving them in the early stage exploration activities, community engagement initiatives, and permitting processes in a respectful and transparent manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPTX has reached out to the chief [Quisses] again and looks forward to meeting face-to-face with community leadership in the near future,\u201d it continues.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A person wearing a camouflage-patterned coat is seen holding an envelope with &quot;PTX&quot; written on the outside.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766563533_398_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7777777777777777\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Neskantaga First Nation&#8217;s Chief Gary Quisses is seen in this image from a video he says was taken Tuesday, when community members served a cease-and-desist letter to PTX Metals Inc. at its mining exploration camp in the Ring of Fire region. (From video submitted by Gary Quisses)<\/p>\n<p>CBC News also reached out to the province about Neskantaga\u2019s concerns that they haven\u2019t been consulted on the mining exploration that\u2019s underway.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s Ministry of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation provided an emailed statement on Wednesday, saying \u201cour government has been clear: no legislation eliminates our duty to consult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain committed to this duty and we look forward to continuing to work, on a government-to-government basis, to address community priorities and build consensus on shared opportunities,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We live in third-world conditions\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Fewer than 400 people live in Neskantaga. The community, located roughly 440 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay, has been living under a boil water advisory for 30 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/thunder-bay\/neskantaga-30-years-boil-water-advisory-1.7454756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the longest in effect in Canada\u2019s history.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Quisses said the First Nation is contending with multiple crises, including a high cost of living \u2014 giving the example that a box of burgers in Neskantaga costs $55 \u2014 mental health and addictions issues, and inadequate infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy community, we live in third-world conditions,\u201d Quisses said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These are challenges Waswa knows all too well, sharing that she\u2019s in recovery from alcoholism and drug use, which started in her teen years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt caused a big impact. I lost motivation to help my community, lost motivation to even care about certain things like powwow and my traditional teachings,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, she\u2019s working closely with the youth in her community, encouraging them to practice their culture.<\/p>\n<p>That includes the chief\u2019s 14-year-old granddaughter, Katrina Sakanee, who wrote about the challenges her community is facing in a piece she titled \u201cDon&#8217;t Touch My Resources, Fix Our Community First.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to defend our land, I will continue fighting for my land, even when I get old I will still continue fighting for my land until I die,\u201d Sakanee wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can&#8217;t just come to our land and start mining, you need our permission.
