Dictionaries define things. It\u2019s their job. So when dictionary.com pronounced \u201c6-7\u201d as their 2025 word of the year<\/a>, you\u2019d think they would have, well, defined it.<\/p>\n

But no. \u201cWe\u2019re all still trying to figure out exactly what it means,\u201d they told us of this year\u2019s \u201clinguistic time capsule.\u201d<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s just how pop culture works, isn\u2019t it? Who\u2019s to explain why parents alone in their cars were suddenly singing \u201cup up up\u201d from that \u201cKPop Demon Hunters?\u201d song? Or why, in the Venn diagram of pop culture and zoology, it was the capybara that emerged victorious and beloved? Goodbye, Moo Deng. You\u2019re adorable, but so 2024.<\/p>\n

Despite our new obsessions, though, some things remained constant \u2014 by which we mean Taylor Swift<\/a> and Beyonc\u00e9, of course<\/a>. It seems like every year gets bigger for Swift. But in 2025, she put a bow \u2014 or ring \u2014 on it with Travis Kelce,<\/a> announcing \u201cyour English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.\u201d As for Beyonc\u00e9, the musical goddess finally won that best album Grammy she long deserved \u2014 and, on tour, introduced a new force: her daughter, Blue Ivy.<\/p>\n

So from the inexplicable to the familiar, here’s our annual, highly selective journey down pop culture memory lane:<\/p>\n

JANUARY<\/p>\n

They may not be Tayvis, but they\u2019re a delightful couple just the same: Zendaya and Tom Holland are engaged<\/a>. Let\u2019s hear it also for Demi Moore, who wins a Golden Globe<\/a> for her wild performance in \u201cThe Substance.\u201d At the bookstore, fans go wild for \u201cOnyx Storm,” the third installment of Rebecca Yarros’ romantasy series. A Nirvana reunion highlights FireAid, a fundraiser for relief efforts following the Los Angeles wildfires. At the Australian Open, U.S. tennis star Coco Gauff mourns the temporary loss of TikTok\u2019s<\/a> app back home, drawing a broken heart on a TV lens.<\/p>\n

FEBRUARY<\/p>\n

\u201cSalutations!\u201d says Samuel L. Jackson, introducing Kendrick Lamar,<\/a> the first solo hip-hop artist \u2014 and Pulitzer winner \u2014 to headline the Super Bowl halftime show. (P.S. Is that Serena Williams?<\/a>) At the Grammys, members of the Los Angeles Fire Department present Beyonc\u00e9 with her best album trophy for \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d<\/a> \u2014 the most awarded and nominated artist in Grammy history becomes the first Black woman to win the top prize in the 21st century. In the age of TikTok, you never know what\u2019s going to catch fire \u2014 like those hand-penned party invitations from 87-year old Doug Turner to his Pennsylvania neighbors, with the priceless line: \u201c4 p.m. until the cops arrive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEven Queen Bey herself was at a loss for words over her latest Grammy milestone.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

MARCH<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Oscar month!<\/a> All hail to Sean Baker’s victorious, Brooklyn-set \u201cAnora\u201d<\/a> and its star, Mikey Madison. Also scoring an acting prize is Adrien Brody<\/a> for \u201cThe Brutalist\u201d \u2014 who probably should have found another place to put his chewing gum. \u201cWicked,\u201d an audience favorite, misses out on big prizes, but its stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, perform a rousing opening number.<\/a> Meanwhile, the once-promising Netflix contender \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d<\/a> wins two prizes but sees best picture chances evaporate in the wake of an uproar over past tweets from star Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

APRIL<\/p>\n

The blender! The poisonous fruit! The lizard! And Sam Rockwell<\/a>! The Thailand-set third season of \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d is certainly a talker. Katy Perry<\/a> may be wishing she\u2019d headed to Thailand rather than outer space: her Earth-kissing return from an 11-minute trip on a Jeff Bezos Blue Origin rocket is widely mocked \u2014 even by Wendy\u2019s, which writes on X: \u201cCan we send her back.\u201d On Beyonc\u00e9’s \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d tour, a star has emerged \u2014 13-year old Blue Ivy<\/a>. In a megadeal, Hailey Beiber sells her Rhode skincare<\/a> and makeup brand for a cool $1 billion.<\/p>\n

MAY<\/p>\n

A crisis, at Cannes! The film fest bans nudity on the carpet <\/a>\u2014 do they think this will halt the \u201cnaked dress\u201d phenomenon? Bonne chance. Also at Cannes, Tom Cruise<\/a> again shows he\u2019ll risk life and limb to entertain, this time atop a classic biplane in \u201cMission Impossible: The Final Reckoning.\u201d Across the ocean, the Met Gala<\/a> turns its focus to menswear and Black style over the centuries. \u201cIt took a minute,\u201d says an approving Spike Lee. \u201cYou belong with me,\u201d Swift sings, buying back the rights to her first six albums. Finally, cue the \u201cChicago Pope\u201d memes \u2014 in honor of the first American pope, Leo XIV.<\/a> Later this year, he’ll reveal his Wordle strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world will know you as pop stars \u2014 but you will be much more than that.\u201d Like, perhaps, the surprise, multigenerational hit of the summer? \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d starts streaming<\/a> this month, and in August will give Netflix a big box office win<\/a> with its singalong screenings. On TV, it\u2019s a new season of love \u2014 \u201cLove Island USA,\u201d<\/a> that is, chronicling the goings-on at a luxury villa in Fiji. It’s the album cover that launched a thousand conversations: Some are offended when Sabrina Carpenter illustrates her \u201cMan’s Best Friend\u201d album<\/a> with a photo of her on all fours, with a man holding her hair. Is it offensive, a purposeful joke, or nothing at all? Meanwhile, politics finds its way into the Glastonbury Festival in Britain, as rap-punk duo Bob Vylan spark a police probe after leading a chant calling for \u201cdeath\u201d to the Israeli military.<\/p>\n

JULY<\/p>\n

Oasis begins a reunion tour, and the Gallagher brothers are still getting along! \u201cSydney Sweeney has great jeans<\/a>,\u201d goes the much-discussed advertisement, and American Eagle insists it\u2019s about the denim. CBS says it will end Stephen Colbert’s show<\/a> in May 2026 \u2014 a move that will remove from air one of President Donald Trump’s most outspoken critics. We cannot leave July behind \u2014 although at least two people would have loved to \u2014 without mentioning the saga of the Coldplay KissCam<\/a>. Finally, within six days, the world loses three \u201980s icons: mustachioed wrestling icon Hulk Hogan<\/a>, heavy metal godfather Ozzy Osbourne<\/a>, and beloved \u201cCosby Show\u201d actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner<\/a>.<\/p>\n

AUGUST<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s just give this whole entry to pop culture\u2019s biggest \u201cLove Story\u201d \u2014 because, baby, she said yes! Taylor-Travis skeptics eat their words when the couple announces their happy news<\/a>, in what’s destined to become one of the most liked posts in Instagram history. It\u2019s the fairytale culmination of a courtship that began during the Eras Tour and for two years captivated millions around the world, but especially Swifties, the pop star\u2019s loving and fiercely protective fan base.<\/p>\n

SEPTEMBER<\/p>\n

Proving once again that Hollywood loves stories about itself, the Emmys<\/a> heap awards on Seth Rogen’s<\/a> movie-biz satire \u201cThe Studio.\u201d Also triumphing is \u201cThe Pitt,\u201d the edgy medical drama starring beloved \u201cER\u201d veteran Noah Wyle that beats out the mighty \u201cSeverance.\u201d Perhaps the biggest Cinderella story of all: 15-year-old Owen Cooper,<\/a> the youngest Emmy winner in over 40 years for the searing \u201cAdolescence.\u201d Also this month, Jimmy Kimmel is temporarily suspended<\/a> by ABC bosses for comments that angered supporters of the slain Charlie Kirk. The world says goodbye to Robert Redford,<\/a> Hollywood\u2019s golden screen idol turned influential activist.<\/p>\n

OCTOBER<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, how was your October?\u201d \u201cOh, 6-7.\u201d<\/a> That\u2019s apparently how one should use the new viral term \u2014 accompanied by that palms-up gesture. You know who has better moves than that? Bad Bunny, who hosts<\/a> the season premiere of \u201cSaturday Night Live.\u201d In Swift updates, her new album \u201cThe Life Of A Showgirl\u201d sets sales records<\/a>. The shocking Louvre heist<\/a> captures the world\u2019s attention, not least for the impossibly dapper stranger who walks into an AP photographer\u2019s frame. Another sad loss: Diane Keaton<\/a>, famous for her fedoras, vests and especially \u201cLa di da, La di da.\u201d<\/p>\n

NOVEMBER<\/p>\n

Are we at the end of the yellow brick road? The \u201cWicked\u201d press tour, which reached all ends of the universe actual and fictional, wraps with the release of Jon M. Chu’s second installment, \u201cWicked: For Good.\u201d<\/a> The reviews are much less, er, enthusiastical this time, but the movie defies gravity at the box office<\/a>. That\u2019s not enough for Jonathan Bailey, aka Fiyero, who is named People\u2019s Sexiest Man Alive<\/a>. Another fan favorite, Robert Irwin, is also having a very good month: a decade after his sister, Bindi, did the same, the son of late conservationist Steve Irwin is crowned winner of \u201cDancing With The Stars.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

DECEMBER<\/p>\n

One award after another! Excuse the rather obvious pun, but it\u2019s the perfect one to describe momentum in the Oscars race. While some films see their fortunes fade on Golden Globe nominations<\/a> day, the emerging favorite is \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d<\/a> director Paul Thomas Anderson’s father-daughter saga of political resistance starring Leonardo DiCaprio and newcomer Chase Infiniti. Its success also lends a victory to Warner Bros.<\/a> in the middle of its Netflix acquisition deal \u2014 which, at year\u2019s end, is in a holding pattern, facing antitrust challenges and a hostile takeover effort from Paramount, and sowing one fear after another that the very nature of entertainment will change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dictionaries define things.
