\u201cI never thought so many people watched cycling. I always believed it was just a few of us obsessives. This year I had to sell my car after I was kicked off the team. I left the dealership and walked home. That\u2019s when I understood how fast everything can change. Since then I\u2019ve trained dressed in black. Not for the look, but because that\u2019s how I feel. And even so, people recognize me, stop me, ask me questions. And I smile, but inside I\u2019m ashamed. Ashamed of having failed.<\/p>\n

Of disappointing my parents. My people. My girlfriend, who\u2019s been the only one holding me up when everything was falling apart. I\u2019m not writing this to seek pity or to justify anything. I made a mistake. A mistake has consequences and I\u2019m paying them. I apologize to anyone who felt affected. Leaving the bike doesn\u2019t hurt me. I lived cycling the way I wanted: full gas, with heart, no half measures. What hurts is feeling that you\u2019ve disappointed your own. That\u2019s the hardest part. Today I\u2019m not saying goodbye. I\u2019m just pausing. Breathing. And moving forward, however I can, but with my feet on the ground.
