{"id":367351,"date":"2025-12-25T04:27:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T04:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/367351\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T04:27:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T04:27:11","slug":"family-of-woman-seriously-injured-in-highway-1-crash-says-life-can-change-in-a-moment-bc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/367351\/","title":{"rendered":"Family of woman seriously injured in Highway 1 crash says life can change in a moment &#8211; BC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The family of a woman who was seriously injured in a head-on crash along Highway 1 in Surrey, B.C., on Monday morning is speaking out about the tragic event.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765485674_689_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Maria Elizebeth Flores-Estrada was on her way to work when she was struck by a vehicle that had crossed over from the eastbound lanes on Highway 1.<\/p>\n<p>Her daughter, Betsabe Flores, rushed to Royal Columbian Hospital as fast as she could to see her mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer legs were broken, her arm was broken, I was waiting for her there in the emergency with my sister and everything, just trying to calm everyone down, too, letting everyone know the process of coming here,\u201d she told Global News.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11587899\/fatal-head-on-crash-closes-highway-surrey-monday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">One person died in the collision<\/a>, which involved three vehicles and happened around 7:15 a.m. in the westbound lanes just before the 176th Street exit in Surrey.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Flores said she knows her mom is lucky to be alive and her family\u2019s hearts go out to the family of the person who died.<\/p>\n<p>Flores-Estrada has a long road to recovery now.<\/p>\n<p>She sustained multiple fractures on the left side of her body, including fractures in multiple areas of her arm and leg.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors have told the family that she will require screws and metal plates to stabilize her injuries, involving both her arm and her leg.<\/p>\n<p>These injuries and surgeries will significantly limit her mobility and independence and may cause long-term physical limitations as she recovers.<\/p>\n<p>Flores-Estrada underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been pretty hard,\u201d Flores said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/healthiq.jpg\" alt=\"Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet weekly health news<\/p>\n<p>Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a really big family. And then out of nowhere, that happens. She just had to be there at that moment, at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>BC Highway Patrol said the initial investigation indicates that one of the vehicles appears to have crossed over from the eastbound lanes and caused the head-on collision.<\/p>\n<p>There are no wire barriers along that stretch of the highway like there are along other areas of major highways in B.C.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven a plastic little meridian would be nice,\u201d Flores said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think for the future, too, just to make sure that this doesn\u2019t happen to anybody else, I definitely want to advocate for that as well. I guess it\u2019s just incredibly dangerous.
