The origins of Boxing Day are unknown, but the day after Christmas Day has been celebrated since the Middle Ages<\/a>. Records of the name first appeared in Victorian England, when servants would be given the day off, along with a box of leftover food, while in Australia, it was recognised as a public holiday back in 1871.<\/p>\n According to RMIT professor of advertising, Robert Crawford<\/a>, Boxing Day\u2019s bargain-hunting reputation can be traced back to a Myer advertisement printed in the Herald in 1954<\/a> fuelled by the post war economic boom.<\/p>\n The tradition is still alive and well.
