Four months later, the 25-year-old is back on the bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a broken jaw, a broken nose, and somehow I didn\u2019t lose my sight,\u201d Baroncini said to <a href=\"https:\/\/sporza.be\/nl\/2025\/12\/17\/-een-wonder-dat-ik-nog-leef-het-straffe-verhaal-van-filippo-baroncini-die-11-uur-lang-geopereerd-werd-aan-gezicht~1765981467533\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sporza<\/a>. \u201cI still can\u2019t bring myself to look at the photos from right after the crash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accident happened during the third stage on a nasty gravel descent. \u201cI lost control and hit a wall. I remember every detail,\u201d he says. Former world champ Micha\u0142 Kwiatkowski, also involved, alerted his team doctor, who stayed by Baroncini\u2019s side. \u201cI\u2019m still grateful to both of them,\u201d he said.<br \/>Baroncini spent 45 minutes in an ambulance before paramedics rushed him to the hospital. Once there, he underwent emergency surgery on his collarbone, but it was the extensive facial fractures that worried doctors most. His family flew to Poland to be by his side during his coma, a period he recalls with emotion: \u201cIf I could have reassured my father then, I would have, but I couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flown to Italy for reconstructive surgery, Baroncini went through an 11-hour operation. \u201cWaking up, I realised it was a miracle I was alive and could still see,\u201d he says, noting that his racing glasses had shattered, sparing his eyes by mere millimetres.<\/p>\n<p>Baroncini returned to riding on Oct. 28 during team days in Abu Dhabi. \u201cI\u2019m still not at full strength. But being back on the bike feels amazing. I have to be patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has begun working with a psychologist to process the trauma and hopes to race again by March.
