The San Francisco Giants<\/a> aren’t the most active team so far this winter, but they’ve added Adrian Houser to a $22 million deal over two years to bolster the starting rotation.<\/p>\n

But the Giants could still use a second baseman, and such a move could come at some time during this winter. How about on Christmas Day? It wouldn’t be the first time the Giants have been active during the holidays.<\/p>\n

According to Baseball Reference<\/a>, the Giants have made a roster move on Christmas Day before, being one of 13 teams in MLB history to make a move on Christmas Day since 1880.<\/p>\n

Giants Christmas Day roster moves in MLB history<\/p>\n

There have been two roster moves from the Giants on Christmas Day in their franchise history. The most recent came in 1996, when they signed left-handed pitcher Lee Hancock to a free agent deal on Christmas Day.<\/p>\n

He never made an MLB appearance for the Giants, but the same cannot be said for the Giants’ other Christmas addition. Rickey Adams was signed to a free agent deal on Christmas in 1984, and he went on to play in 54 games, recording 0.1 bWAR.<\/p>\n

Adams had 23 hits, 12 runs scored, three doubles, one triple, two home runs, 10 RBIs, one stolen base, one caught stealing, five walks, and 23 strikeouts with a .190 average and a .509 OPS for the Giants in 1985.<\/p>\n

Only Hancock and Adams were the subjects of roster moves on Christmas for the Giants in MLB history. But on Christmas Eve, the Giants have made a few more roster moves.<\/p>\n

In 1997, the Giants signed Steve Reed, where he recorded a 1.48 ERA in 50 appearances for the Giants before being traded mid-season to Cleveland, where he posted a 6.66 ERA to finish out the season.<\/p>\n

Mike Sadek re-signed with the Giants in 1980, and he posted a 0.2 bWAR in the next season. There haven’t been any other Christmas Eve or Christmas Day roster moves from the Giants in franchise history.<\/p>\n

While the majority of these deals weren’t impactful, the signing of Reed, who posted a 3.63 ERA over 14 seasons with 17.8 bWAR in his MLB career, was by far the best.<\/p>\n

He was traded alongside Jacob Cruz for Shawon Dunston (-0.7 bWAR), Alvin Morman (-0.1 bWAR), and Jose Mesa (0.1 bWAR).<\/p>\n

While the deal was a net-negative for both teams, his original Christmas Eve signing with the Giants was the best deal of the holiday season in Giants franchise history.<\/p>\n
