Three major trails in the area were closed off and traps were set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a follow-up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ConservationOfficerService\/posts\/1167598415395080\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:post;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">post<\/a> Monday, the Conservation Officer Service found the grizzly bear attack was \u201cdefensive in nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They said the couple \u201clikely startled the two bears in a surprise encounter on a corner of the trail, which is bordered by thick brush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Officials found no evidence the bears were stalking or hunting the couple, leading officials to choose not to \u201ccapture or dispatch the bears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The trails remained closed \u201cas a precautionary measure\u201d at the time of the follow-up post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThese people were well-prepared. They had bear spray, had it readily accessible, and knew how to use it,\u201d Conservation Officer Service Inspector Dave Webster said in the follow-up post. \u201cWe\u2019d like to recognize these actions and encourage anyone hiking, biking or recreating in bear country to take similar precautions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The National Park Service says bear attacks are rare, but warns to take precautions by distancing yourself from the animals.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Officials say the grizzly attack was \u2018defensive in nature\u2019 (Parks Canada\/Dan Rafla)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"598\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/4ce314b1efc21116a85a269c61960ff7.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Officials say the grizzly attack was \u2018defensive in nature\u2019 (Parks Canada\/Dan Rafla)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If you are attacked by a grizzly bear, the service says to \u201cplay dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cLay \ufb02at on your stomach with your hands clasped behind your neck.
