{"id":369672,"date":"2025-12-26T08:58:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-26T08:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/369672\/"},"modified":"2025-12-26T08:58:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T08:58:15","slug":"deep-snow-regional-tourism-fuel-jaspers-winter-comeback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/369672\/","title":{"rendered":"Deep snow, regional tourism fuel Jasper\u2019s winter comeback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 80 centimetres of snow fell at Marmot Basin over the last two weeks \u2014 and the impact is felt beyond the ski resort.<\/p>\n<p>The tourism-dependent economy of Jasper, Alta., has been recovering from extensive wildfire damage and two consecutive poor snow seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Snow is a form of currency for the town, which relies on Marmot attracting regional tourists to keep the lights on in the winter season. Without snow, that\u2019s a hard sell.<\/p>\n<p>For Brian Rode, vice-president of Marmot Basin, the abundance of snow is a relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s really night-and-day between last year&#8217;s conditions and this year\u2019s conditions,\u201d said Rode. \u201cThe Rockies in Alberta are having just a spectacular year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marmot has opened almost all of its terrain, save the Eagle East area. But that isn\u2019t due to a lack of snow. Once avalanche control makes the high alpine area safe to skiers and boarders, Rode said the conditions will be \u201cfantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cWhen Marmot wins, Jasper absolutely wins as well.\u201d- Brian Rode, vice-president of Marmot Basin<\/p>\n<p>Rode said skier visits are up 15 per cent compared to this time last year, despite the season opening a week later.<\/p>\n<p>Marmot isn\u2019t the only business benefitting from the powder. Rode described the relationship between the longstanding winter anchor and the townsite as \u201csymbiotic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our whole community, in a way, is in the ski business in the wintertime,&#8221; Rode said.<\/p>\n<p>To strengthen that connection this year, a new shuttle service has launched, offering $10 round trips between local hotels and the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Marmot wins, Jasper absolutely wins as well,\u201d said Rode.<\/p>\n<p>Albertans to the rescue<\/p>\n<p>Albertans \u2014 especially Edmontonians \u2014 drive Jasper\u2019s winter economy, whereas in the summer months, they rely on international tourists, said Tyler Riopel, CEO of Tourism Jasper.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s partly because winter highways in the Rockies can be difficult to navigate for those who aren\u2019t used to the conditions, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Jasper is, essentially, Edmonton\u2019s \u201cbackyard\u201d and \u201cplayground,\u201d Riopel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see them as a core audience and people who really love Jasper and are here for the long term and our repeat customers,\u201d said Riopel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Snowy landscape with coniferous trees seen form an ascending chairlift.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766739495_455_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7746967071057191\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Officials say Jasper\u2019s winter recovery is being powered by visitors from Edmonton and northern Alberta, who treat the mountain park as their &#8216;playground.&#8217; (Marmot Basin)<\/p>\n<p>He said that, following the devastating wildfires in the summer of 2024, which destroyed a third of the townsite\u2019s structures, there was a lingering hesitation among travellers.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, a below average snow year drew fewer regional tourists.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t have as much of that challenge [of uncertainty] this year,&#8221; said Riopel. &#8220;It&#8217;s really now about snow conditions and those regional people spending their hard-earned dollars and choosing to come on a vacation here versus elsewhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rode agreed that the confidence in Jasper is back, and the business sectors of retail, restaurants and bars are still intact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it&#8217;s changed significantly, it&#8217;s still remarkably beautiful,\u201d said Rode. \u201cThe mountains are still pointy. They&#8217;re dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With hesitation clearing, the town is preparing for Jasper in January, its annual festival running from Jan. 16 to Feb. 1. Riopel said it will emphasize the \u201clighter side of winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tradition over forecast<\/p>\n<p>While Marmot Basin depends highly on the forecast, Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge relies more on tradition to attract guests post-wildfire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I want to do the comparison [between this winter and last], it&#8217;s almost the same,&#8221; said Rabih Maleh, director of well-being at Jasper Park Lodge, adding that he is seeing many familiar faces from last year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A woman in a white robe emerges from a barrel sauna into a winter landscape of a frozen lake and snow\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766739495_249_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5998101115594587\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Guests at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge can alternate between new cedar barrel saunas and the freezing waters of Lac Beauvert, as part of the resort&#8217;s new &#8216;glacial plunge&#8217; experience.
