{"id":370317,"date":"2025-12-26T16:10:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-26T16:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/370317\/"},"modified":"2025-12-26T16:10:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T16:10:07","slug":"california-braces-for-flooding-and-avalanche-risk-during-strong-storms-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/370317\/","title":{"rendered":"California braces for flooding and avalanche risk during strong storms | California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A strong storm system that has brought relentless winds, rain and snowfall to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/california\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a> was expected to ease on Friday, but there was still a risk of high surf along the coast, flash flooding near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/los-angeles\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles<\/a> and avalanches in the Sierra Nevada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Waves near the San Francisco Bay Area could reach up to 25ft (7.6 meters) on Friday, parts of southern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/california\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a> were at risk of flooding, and avalanches could hit the Lake Tahoe area, officials warned. Residents were told to be ready to evacuate the mountain town of Wrightwood about 80 miles (130km) north-east of Los Angeles because of mudslides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Atmospheric rivers carried massive plumes of moisture from the tropics during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. Photograph: William Liang\/AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Roads in the 5,000-resident town of Wrightwood were covered in rocks, debris and thick mud on Thursday. With power out, a gas station and coffee shop running on generators were serving as hubs for residents and visitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s really a crazy Christmas,\u201d said Jill Jenkins, who was spending the holiday with her 13-year-old grandson, Hunter Lopiccolo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lopiccolo said the family almost evacuated the previous day, when water washed away a chunk of their backyard, but they decided to stay and still celebrated the holiday. Lopiccolo got a new snowboard and e-bike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe just played card games all night with candles and flashlights,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Davey Schneider hiked a mile and a half (2.4km) through rain and flood water up to his shins from his Wrightwood residence on Wednesday to rescue cats from his grandfather\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI wanted to help them out because I wasn\u2019t confident that they were going to live,\u201d Schneider said on Thursday. \u201cFortunately, they all lived. They\u2019re all OK \u2013 just a little bit scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Arlene Corte said roads in town turned into rivers, but her house was not damaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt could be a whole lot worse,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re here talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">With more rain on the way, more than 150 firefighters were stationed in the area, said Shawn Millerick, San Bernardino county fire department spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019re ready,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s all hands on deck at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A car drives through a flooded road on La Cienega Boulevard on Wednesday in Los Angeles, California. Photograph: Apu Gomes\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A falling tree killed a San Diego man on Wednesday, news outlets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wafb.com\/2025\/12\/26\/storm-topples-tree-branch-killing-grandfather-outside-his-home-christmas-eve\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>. Farther north, a Sacramento sheriff\u2019s deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/deadly-crash-elk-grove-franklin-boulevard\/69859465\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died<\/a> in what appeared to be a weather-related crash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Areas along the coast, including Malibu, were under a flood watch until Friday afternoon, and wind and flood advisories were issued for much of the Sacramento valley and the San Francisco Bay Area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Southern California typically gets half an inch to 1 inch (1.3-2.5cm) of rain this time of year, but this week many areas could see between 4 and 8in (10 and 20cm), with even more in the mountains, National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Wofford said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More wind and heavy snow was expected in the Sierra Nevada, where gusts created \u201cnear white-out conditions\u201d and made mountain pass travel treacherous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/gavin-newsom\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gavin Newsom<\/a> declared emergencies in six counties to allow state assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The state deployed resources and first responders to several coastal and southern California counties, and the California national guard was on standby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"> This article was amended on 26 December 2025.
