{"id":37134,"date":"2025-07-31T15:20:07","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T15:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/37134\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T15:20:07","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T15:20:07","slug":"after-nearly-100-years-adult-winter-run-chinook-salmon-seen-in-california-river-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/37134\/","title":{"rendered":"After nearly 100 years, adult winter-run Chinook salmon seen in California river | California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Adult winter-run Chinook salmon have been spotted in northern California\u2019s McCloud River for the first time in nearly a century, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1420582385760125\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California department of fish and wildlife<\/a> (CDFW).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The salmon were confirmed to be seen near Ash Camp, tucked deep in the mountains of northern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/california\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a> where Hawkins creek flows into the McCloud River. A video posted by CDFW and taken by the Pacific states marine fisheries commission shows a female Chinook salmon guarding her nest of eggs on the river floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/west-coast\/endangered-species-conservation\/sacramento-river-winter-run-chinook-salmon\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Winter-run Chinook salmon<\/a> is considered an endangered species by Noaa, and is marked by the organization as \u201cone of just nine species considered to be most at risk of extinction in the near-term\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/indiancultural.org\/2025\/07\/25\/press-release\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawL0qpBleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFhSmZMQUZwanJnTTF4UEVWAR5KveR6h749e-etqb7lhYpbHR8mKr1LOY8y9H9Hp9vFssfvr152HKwftOk9PQ_aem_ojVIDa8Pc7DtdLXqCQE-wA\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Winnemem Wintu Tribe<\/a> has long fought the enlargement of the Shasta dam, which has hindered salmon hatching by warming water temperatures above the chilly range that salmon prefer to lay their eggs in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The introduction of hatchery-raised, winter-run salmon \u201cdelays extinction\u201d, according to Rebekah Olstad, salmon restoration project manager for the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, with understanding a longer road lies ahead, one that hinges on full restoration of self-sufficient wild salmon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThe salmon that exist right now, they don\u2019t know how to mountain climb, they don\u2019t know how to go up waterfalls because they\u2019re blocked,\u201d Olstad said. \u201cSo it\u2019s generations and generations of eggs and salmon who don\u2019t have those genes anymore to be wild.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Olstad is working to help the Winnemem Wintu achieve two further goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Constructing a volitional passage for the salmon, meaning allowing a way for the salmon to spawn and complete a full life cycle from ocean to stream, is crucial for eco-systemic restoration, given salmon\u2019s status as a keystone species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cSalmon are in the McLeod River, and that\u2019s a good thing. But there\u2019s no way it\u2019s for them to get out back to the ocean,\u201d Michael Preston, a Winnemem Wintu tribal member, said. \u201cThat\u2019s the real salmon, right? They have to go to the ocean to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Wild salmon from the McCloud River were long thought by the Winnemem Wintu to be extinct. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/14\/us\/at-war-against-dam-tribe-turns-to-old-ways.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">international coverage of a Winnemem war dance protest<\/a> against the Shasta dam in 2004 led to the discovery of McCloud River salmon in an unexpected place \u2013 the mountainous rivers of New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Chinook salmon were exported around the world by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/2201473X.2025.2464330?af=R\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baird hatchery in the early 1900s<\/a>, where some from the McCloud River took hold in New Zealand. The Winnemem Wintu are working with Noaa and the CDFW to bring the fish, and their wild genetics, back to their homeland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Salmon restoration is not unique to the Winnemem Wintu or their ancestral lands, but to the land across the western US and Canada that the fish historically swam. For the Winnemem Wintu, and other tribal nations, salmon are part of their cosmology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cSalmon restoration is a part of a prophecy that we\u2019re following. The prayer is that it connects us back into our creation stories,\u201d Preston said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Last year salmon began \u201ccoming home\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/nov\/19\/klamath-river-dam-removal-salmon\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to the Klamath River<\/a> along the Oregon-California border after a hard-fought, decades-long legal battle spearheaded by the Karuk, Klamath, and Yurok tribal nations to remove four dams along the river.
