Hockey Canada issued an apology on Saturday after its \u200bplayers skipped the post-game handshakes \u200dfollowing an emotionally charged 7-5 win over Czechia at the IIHF World Junior Championship.<\/p>\n

It is customary for teams to shake hands \u200dfollowing \u200bgames at the World Juniors, but Canada skated off the ice on Friday in Minneapolis without doing so after a heated affair that included some pre-game antics, plenty of chirping between players and \u2060post-whistle scrums.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing last night\u2019s game, Canada\u2019s National Junior Team skated off the ice before shaking hands with Czechia,\u201d Hockey Canada said in a statement. \u201cHockey Canada takes full responsibility for this oversight and we have \u200capologized to the \u200dteam, Czech Ice Hockey Association and IIHF for our \u200dmistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perennial favourites Canada, who suffered heartbreaking \u200cquarter-final losses to Czechia at the World Junior \u2060Championship in the last two years, needed to score four times \u200bin the third period to secure the victory in their opening game of the tournament.<\/p>\n

Team Canada captain Porter Martone scored an empty-net goal with one minute remaining to give his team a two-goal lead \u200bbut then was given a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for skating past the Czechia bench and tapping forward Adam Novotny on the backside.<\/p>\n

Players and Canada coach Dale Hunter have pleaded ignorance for failing to participate in the post-game tradition of shaking hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one \u2060was trying to be disrespectful or anything like that,\u201d said \u2060Canada winger Tij Iginla. \u201cWe actually didn\u2019t really know we were supposed to shake \u200chands, but now we do and we\u2019ll shake them after every game no matter the result.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hunter said: \u201cYou know something, though, I didn\u2019t know.
