Masking protocols have been implemented in\u00a0all clinical areas of Bluewater Health in response to a significant increase in influenza cases, both locally and across the province.<\/p>\n
As of December 22, staff, professional staff, volunteers, and students will be required to wear a mask with eye protection in clinical areas within two metres of all patients.<\/p>\n
Patients at the Sarnia and Petrolia hospitals\u00a0must also wear a mask when leaving their rooms.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, visitors are strongly encouraged to wear a mask, particularly in clinical areas and when within two\u00a0metres of patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAt Bluewater Health, we are seeing the impacts of this severe influenza season firsthand,\u201d said Chief of Staff and Vice President of Medical Affairs Dr. Michel Haddad. \u201cMasking in clinical areas is an important step to reduce the spread of respiratory illness and help protect patients, families, and healthcare workers \u2013 especially those most vulnerable to severe outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Provincial surveillance data show current influenza positivity rates at 33.8 per cent, with 2,239 hospital admissions across the province.<\/p>\n
The local organization\u00a0said\u00a0health officials\u00a0anticipate continued increases in influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cInfluenza is not a mild illness, particularly this season,\u201d\u00a0said Dr. Haddad. \u201cVaccination is an effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization. We strongly encourage community members to ensure they are up to date with their influenza vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n
Community members are also encouraged to stay home when sick and to\u00a0practice good hand hygiene.<\/p>\n
