\n\tRyan Coogler<\/a> appeared on the \u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d podcast amid his ongoing awards season press tour for \u201cSinners\u201d and revealed the original story plans for \u201cBlack Panther<\/a> 2.\u201d The director was well into development on the sequel to his Oscar-winning 2018 blockbuster when lead actor Chadwick Boseman<\/a> died in August 2020 from colon cancer. Boseman\u2019s tragic passing forced Coogler to completely overhaul the sequel into what would become 2022\u2019s \u201cBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMarvel fans wondering what Coogler originally planned for Boseman\u2019s return finally have an answer as Coogler told \u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d podcast host Josh Horowitz that his original \u201cBlack Panther 2\u201d script focused on an adventure between Boseman\u2019s T\u2019Challa and the character\u2019s 8-year-old son. Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta in \u201cWakanda Forever,\u201d was still the main villain.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe big thing with the script was a thing called the Ritual of 8 where a prince is 8 years old, he must spend 8 days in the bush with his father,\u201d Coogler said. \u201cThe rule is for those 8 days the prince can ask the father any question and the father must answer. In the course of those 8 days, Namor launches an attack\u2026 he had to deal with someone who\u2019s insanely dangerous but because of this ritual, his son had to be joined at his hip the whole time or else they\u2019d violate this ritual that had never been broken. It was insane. Chadwick was going to kill it, but life goes as it goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCoogler confirmed that he finished this version of the \u201cBlack Panther 2\u201d script and reached out to Boseman to read it, but \u201che was too sick\u201d <\/a>to do so.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe was at a place where it wasn\u2019t going to happen,\u201d the director added. \u201cOur relationship was very interesting. He meant a lot of me but I found out after his passing from his family and his friends about how much I meant to him. That fucked me up pretty good. I wonder if he knew how much he meant to me. I did wonder\u2026 But I loved that script. I put so much into that version of the movie because I felt like I had gotten to know Chadwick as a performer. I threw a lot at him in the first \u2018Panther\u2019 but I realized I was just scratching the surface. It was a 180-page draft.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCoogler also revealed that he originally wanted to use Kraven the Hunter in the first \u201cBlack Panther\u201d movie, but he was blocked from doing so, as the character is owned by Sony and not Disney.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[I] wanted to base it on the Christopher Priest run of \u2018Panther,\u2019 and his run starts with Panther and Kraven in the kitchen,\u201d Coogler said. \u201cThat\u2019s the first thing. It\u2019s Ross, Panther and Kraven fighting in the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m a big Spider-Man fan, especially \u2018Spider-Man: The Animated Series.\u2019 Kraven is in that. He\u2019s also great in the books,\u201d Coogler continued. \u201cI was like, \u2018Yo, can I have Kraven in the movie?\u2019 They were like, \u2018We don\u2019t think so, but let us check.\u2019 So, they hit Sony, and Sony was like, \u2018Absolutely not.\u2019 They came back to me like, \u2018Yo, we can\u2019t do it.\u2019 So, I was like, \u2018Okay.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSony would ultimately end up making its own \u201cKraven the Hunter\u201d movie with director J.C. Chandor and actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the title role, although it was a box office dud with $62 million worldwide in December 2024.<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing the critical and commercial success of \u201cSinners,\u201d Coogler is now in development on a third \u201cBlack Panther\u201d movie at Marvel Studios. <\/p>\n
