<\/p>\nDriving through\u00a0Steinbach recently, you may have noticed a new\u00a0snow\u00a0sculpture\u00a0taking shape\u00a0on the corner of\u00a0Brandt and Elmdale.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Seasoned sculptor Lyle Peters says he was looking for\u00a0a project\u00a0to tackle\u00a0over Christmas Break. When deciding\u00a0what to create and where, the perfect\u00a0idea\u00a0came to mind.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI’ve\u00a0done an old church there before but now\u00a0that\u00a0there’s\u00a0a bakery there\u00a0that is an\u00a0old church bakery,\u00a0I figured,\u00a0let\u2019s\u00a0do another church there.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a good spot for one,\u201d says Peters.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The basic shape is complete.\u00a0Next come the windows,\u00a0and after that, Peters\u00a0says, it can get detailed like crazy. How far it goes will depend on how many people are willing to\u00a0help.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI’ll\u00a0spend a bit more time there, but sometimes if I get a bit of a crew, then more happens. And if I have less of a crew,\u00a0then\u00a0I\u00a0have to\u00a0decide,\u00a0what’s\u00a0important to me and\u00a0what’s\u00a0not.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
For the\u00a0City of Steinbach, Peters and his brother Kevin\u00a0sculpt at no charge.\u00a0He\u00a0sets up the\u00a0forms,\u00a0and the city fills\u00a0them\u00a0with snow.\u00a0Peters says\u00a0money is\u00a0not\u00a0the\u00a0main\u00a0motivator.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s\u00a0being\u00a0active.\u00a0It’s being\u00a0creative.\u00a0I have enough of a crew of guys that are into it that\u00a0for me,\u00a0it’s\u00a0my winter sport.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Peters says sometimes his kids will help out as\u00a0well,\u00a0and it becomes a family affair.\u00a0He\u00a0mentions that\u00a0it would be nice to get more people into it and\u00a0that he\u00a0is not sure what is holding them back.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The weather plays a big part in the success of the project.\u00a0Both brothers agree the\u00a0perfect\u00a0conditions\u00a0are if\u00a0it\u00a0is\u00a0cold enough\u00a0that your\u00a0gloves\u00a0do\u00a0not\u00a0get\u00a0wet,\u00a0but\u00a0warm enough\u00a0that\u00a0you\u00a0can dress for it.\u00a0When it\u00a0is\u00a0too warm, snow\u00a0gets\u00a0stuck on the tools\u00a0which\u00a0make\u00a0them\u00a0hard to work with.\u00a0Melting\u00a0under the sun is also always a concern\u00a0for these structures.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the sun\u00a0more than the warm weather in a lot of cases. The south and west sides always take a real beating.\u00a0The block in town is\u00a0also\u00a0not\u00a0very clean.\u00a0So\u00a0any of those dark spots absorb the sun and\u00a0kind of sink\u00a0into the block.\u00a0There’s\u00a0so many\u00a0things\u00a0it’s\u00a0dependent on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Strategic placing of the artwork can also really make it shine. Like in the case of the church sculpture,\u00a0Peters notes, it is\u00a0very\u00a0pretty\u00a0the way it\u00a0is\u00a0facing now.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s\u00a0nice to get the sun on areas to accent it or pick up the light.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0always\u00a0a bit of a game,\u201d says Peters.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Some larger exhibits have started\u00a0setting up\u00a0buildings to sculp\u00a0indoors. Peters says that\u00a0is\u00a0the case\u00a0when he works\u00a0at the Snow Maze.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo years ago, the\u00a0year it got really warm,\u00a0when we\u00a0sculped a\u00a0Mustang\u00a0it would\u00a0have deteriorated\u00a0to nothing had it been outside, but it was indoors and it totally survived.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Peters\u00a0is\u00a0also preparing for his\u00a0participation\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0Festival du\u00a0Voyageur. He\u00a0will\u00a0be working on\u00a0two blocks, one at the corner of Provencher and Archibald,\u00a0and\u00a0another at the Royal Canadian Mint. So\u00a0far,\u00a0the only\u00a0guideline for the Mint sculpture is that it should feature some kind of animal.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Work is expected to begin mid-January, giving plenty of time to have the sculptures\u00a0ready to help promote the festival.\u00a0<\/p>\n
