{"id":378826,"date":"2025-12-31T06:25:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T06:25:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/378826\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T06:25:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T06:25:16","slug":"windrow-removal-happening-first-in-edmonton-before-residential-blading-in-january-edmonton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/378826\/","title":{"rendered":"Windrow removal happening first in Edmonton before residential blading in January &#8211; Edmonton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over half a metre of snow has piled up on neighbourhood streets across Edmonton but city crews will not begin tackling the task of blading it down until after the new year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765485674_689_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because graders and snowplows will be busy removing windrows and snow piled up on centre medians on major roads and bus routes first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, to this point, we\u2019ve received approximately 72 cm of snow accumulation and last year, overall, we received 107 cm overall \u2014 and by December of last year, we only had 47,\u201d said Val Dacyk, general supervisor of infrastructure field operations with the city\u2019s parks and roads services department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cSo we\u2019ve had almost double the amount of snow compared to last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crews have been working basically around the clock for the past 20 days clearing over 12,000 km of roadway, she said, due to the back-to-back heavy snowfalls over the past few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Heavy snowfall coats roads in Edmonton as winds wreak havoc in central Alberta'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/6P-SNOWMAGEDDON-LIVE.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t4:28<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHeavy snowfall coats roads in Edmonton as winds wreak havoc in central Alberta\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>They have not made it into residential areas yet because it keeps snowing, requiring plows to keep going back to clear Priority 1 to 3 major roads and bus routes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are your mains \u2014 your Calgary Trails, your Gateway Boulevards, those types of things,\u201d Dacyk said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cWhen it snows again on us before we\u2019re completed, we have to go back and start again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city said if it feels like your area hasn\u2019t been touched, it\u2019s not out of neglect \u2014 rather, it just keeps snowing so much, the city keeps having to return to square one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe majority of residential roads we have not made it into,\u201d Dacyk said, \u201cbut we have made it onto bus routes and collectors, which do run through neighbourhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The Phase 1 parking ban enacted Sunday by the City of Edmonton will end Wednesday at noon, but Dacyk said city crews will continue necessary operations before moving to clear residential roads that she said are ranked as Priority 4.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765813388_386_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWindrows are everywhere in the city right now and we acknowledge them. We acknowledge that,\u201d Dacyk said, adding right now crews are still working on the high-priority areas like major travel zones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout the next week we will be continuing to do that \u2014 cleaning up on our main priority lanes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cAt that point, weather allowing, we\u2019ll be going into residential zones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The city said based on current weather forecasts, it anticipates a Phase 2 ban will occur within the next two to three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the residential ban is called, it will take up to 14 days to clear from residential areas,\u201d Dacyk said, adding cooperation is needed from residents to make sure the process goes smoothly and vehicles are not blocked in or damaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cWe really need you to move your vehicles to allow for safe and efficient clearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As windrows have piled up, some residents along bus routes and areas already plowed have complained of them blocking their driveways and sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>The city said crews aim to clear crosswalks and one car width access into driveways, but apologize if the entire entry has been left blocked, saying their operators are human and can make mistakes.
