As is a tradition in many places, our Sun also celebrates that we again survived another lap around the Sun. Fireworks today as the Sun produced a M7.1 solar flare (R2-moderate) which peakerd at 13:51 UTC.<\/p>\n
The solar flare took place around sunspot region 4324 which is located on the Sun’s northern hemisphere, just a few degrees east of the central meridian. Type II and IV radio emissions were observed following the eruption and we see on coronagraph imagery from SOHO\/LASCO the resulting CME as it erupts out into space.<\/p>\n
A faint halo outline can be spotted but the bulk of the trajectory is heading well north-east of us. We expect a glancing blow from this coronal mass ejection late on Friday, 2 January. Considering the faint halo outline we do not expect more than minor G1 geomagnetic storm conditions at the moment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"First of all, a happy new year to all of our visitors!
