This week, Saudi Arabia struck a UAE shipment carrying combat vehicles bound for Yemen in an unprecedented military escalation before accusing Abu Dhabi of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/30\/middleeast\/saudi-arabia-yemen-port-strike-uae-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">highly dangerous<\/a>\u201d actions and endangering the kingdom\u2019s national security.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnlliv0005356p0c531d9z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The civil war in Yemen began in 2014 after the Iran-backed Houthi movement overran the north of the country and took over the capital Sana\u2019a. Saudi Arabia and the UAE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/03\/26\/middleeast\/yemen-saudi-arabia-offensive-why-now\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intervened the following year<\/a>, propping up the local government and militias under a unified vision of destroying the Houthis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnlliv0006356p2vbqlmkp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But over the years, disagreements surfaced between rival Yemeni factions whose competing agendas unintendedly exposed a rift between the two Middle Eastern allies, Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnlliv0007356p2rphz6xs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s how Yemen\u2019s war has morphed into a proxy conflict involving erstwhile allies:\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Who are the warring parties in Yemen and who backs them?<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2025-12-30t100256z-1044698982-rc2yqiaol2c3-rtrmadp-3-yemen-security-division-timeline.JPG\" alt=\"Members of UAE-backed southern Yemeni separatist forces stand by a tank during clashes with government forces in Aden, Yemen, on August 10, 2019.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2432\" width=\"3648\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwmv8sm0000356p6ufa0uec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since the Houthis seized Yemen\u2019s capital, the country has fragmented into multiple spheres of influence, giving Iran expanded leverage on the southern flank of the Arabian Peninsula through its support for the group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnmdg5000f356pw30ffkpl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/19\/middleeast\/red-sea-crisis-explainer-houthi-yemen-israel-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Houthis<\/a>, formally known as Ansar Allah, are a Shiite Islamist movement in the northwest of the country. In 2014, they orchestrated a swift takeover of Sana\u2019a, with some popular backing, seizing control of the government. With sustained Iranian arms supplies and support, they emerged as Yemen\u2019s most cohesive military and political entity, controlling most of the country\u2019s northwestern border with Saudi Arabia, and holding critical Red Sea coastline, including access to vital maritime corridors. Over time, the Houthis evolved into one of Tehran\u2019s most disruptive regional proxies, launching missile strikes on Saudi Arabia and as far as Israel. They endured a prolonged Saudi-led military campaign, which ultimately failed and led to the Houthis securing a de facto truce in 2022.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnmdg5000g356p3ymoug4k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yemen\u2019s internationally recognized government, operating under the Saudi-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/07\/middleeast\/yemen-presidential-council-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Presidential Leadership Council (PLC)<\/a>, was established in 2022 to unify fragmented factions against the Houthis; it commands a loose coalition of regular military remnants, tribal militias, and Sunni Islamist groups in the center and south of the country. These forces hold a patchwork of strongholds, primarily in the central province of Marib, parts of Taiz, and Aden in the south. Since 2015, Saudi Arabia has conducted extensive air and naval operations, with limited ground troop deployments to prop up the government and counter the growing threat on its southern border.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnmdg5000h356paenuabut@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/world\/2021\/03\/15\/aidarus-al-zoubaidi-ctw-yemen.cnn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Southern Transitional Council (STC)<\/a> is a UAE-backed separatist body in southern Yemen founded in 2017 to advocate for the restoration of the southern Yemeni state which ceased to exist in 1990 after the country unified. The UAE\u2019s backing of southern separatists seeking independence directly conflicts with Saudi Arabia\u2019s support for a unified and stable Yemen at its border.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnndpy000o356p2whjhpax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After years of stalled efforts to end the civil war, UAE-backed forces launched a rapid offensive in early December, seizing control of oil-rich provinces \u2013 at times from Saudi-backed forces \u2013 leading to deadly clashes. Tensions peaked this week when Saudi-led coalition airstrikes targeted a UAE shipment of vehicles at southern Yemen\u2019s Mukalla port, accusing Abu Dhabi of endangering Saudi national security.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnndpy000p356pnitgyh04@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The UAE had since announced a withdrawal of its forces from Yemen.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjx0olxw0006356pnpucxpep@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOver the past decade, the UAE acted at the request of the legitimate Yemeni government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and within the Saudi-led Coalition, making substantial sacrifices to support Yemen\u2019s stability and security- particularly in confronting terrorist organizations that threaten civilians and the wider region. In line with its approach of urging calm and de-escalation, the UAE concluded the presence of its counterterrorism forces,\u201d a UAE government official said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnndpy000q356pt6euldd3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Friday, tensions further escalated as Saudi Arabia deployed its navy off Yemen\u2019s coast shortly after Riyadh-backed forces launched what they called a \u201cpeaceful\u201d ground offensive to retake areas from the UAE-backed southern separatists. Videos showed large convoys of vehicles allegedly on their way to the areas under control of southern forces.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwnndpy000r356pfmo87cat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The separatists rejected the claim that the offensive was peaceful, accused Saudi Arabia of misleading the international community and declared the battle a \u201cnorth-south war.\u201d Southern forces also accused Riyadh of launching several airstrikes on its locations. The two states remained divided for about 23 years until unification in 1990, followed shortly by a civil war in 1994, in which southern separatists were defeated, leaving unaddressed grievances that contribute to ongoing conflicts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwno92r000z356p0o39otfm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recurring conflicts have left the nation \u2013 strategically located south of Saudi Arabia with access to key maritime corridors \u2013 heavily impoverished, highly unstable, and well-armed, as regional powers vie for influence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjwno92r0010356pal9bgsdr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amid the renewed conflict, Yemen splinters further, with the Houthis \u2013 once targeted by some of the region\u2019s most powerful nations \u2013 viewing the divisions among their enemies as advantageous.
