Depending on what happens in Wisconsin or upstate New York, he could then join the Blue Bombers for the start of their main camp, which begins May 11th (rookies are on the field May 7th).

Again, though, his future will start to come into focus very soon.

“It’s been a super-exciting week for me overall,” Elgersma began. “I’m super-excited about the CFL Draft (Tuesday) night, getting this opportunity here and Saturday (the final day of the NFL Draft) was a long day with the draft started at 12 o’clock and by the time I got everything sorted out at night there was a lot of emotions.

“I’m really excited for all the opportunities coming up that I got from both those drafts. I’m just looking forward to keeping going ahead with my dream.

“When (the Blue Bombers) called me, I said, ‘I’m doing fantastic now that you guys got the call. I think this is a great fit for me.’ Obviously, it’s a winning organization that has been at the top of the league for a long time. I’m super-excited to go to a place with a great culture, coaching staff and front office there.”

Elgersma said he met Collaros earlier this spring when the two were throwing at Out the Chambers Sports in Ontario — a program run by former Wilfrid Laurier product and CFLer Shamawd Chambers. And while it was just a brief encounter, it did offer Elgersma a snapshot of a potential future relationship should he come to Winnipeg in a week or so.

“He’s one of the greats of this game. one of the greats of the CFL,” he said of Collaros. “It’s super-cool that I get to go to a place that has a guy like Zach there and has done everything you can do at the CFL level. I’m super-excited to learn everything I can from him.”

Elgersma reportedly had a dozen NFL rookie-camp invitations before settling on the Packers and Bills. Green Bay has young star Jordan Love as their No. 1, and he’s backed up by Malik Willis and Sean Clifford, a fifth-round pick in 2023.

Buffalo is led by superstar Josh Allen and also has veteran Mitch Trubisky on their depth chart along with Shane Buechele and Mike White.

“What I’m looking to show is not only can I compete with those guys, I can excel in those facilities and in that group and just put my best foot forward and show these coaches that I’m a guy you can bet on and I’m going to be successful at the next level,” Elgersma said.

“One thing I’ve alway said is my dream is to be a professional quarterback and it’s never been tied to a specific league. I’m super fired up about the opportunity at Winnipeg. I’m confident in myself and I’m confident that I’m going to go down to these mini-camps and show the best I can and I’m hopeful that will lead to a contract.

“But I’m definitely excited to head to Winnipeg and get to work if those don’t work out.”

The Blue Bombers QB room is crowded, too, what with the veteran Collaros being joined by Chris Streveler, Terry Wilson, Jake Dolegala and Shea Patterson.

Still, there’s an obvious excitement about having a Canadian QB like Elgersma — a 6-6, 235 throwing machine who won the Hec Crighton as the best player in U-Sports — potentially in house.

The excitement just oozes from Elgersma, too.

“Excitement is great word for it. This is something I’ve dreamed of for a long time, getting a chance to be a professional quarterback,” he said. “I’m getting a very special and unique opportunity. For me, it’s all about the excitement to make the most of it and doing what I can to continue this journey. This is the start line for me as a pro. This is just the beginning.

“It’s been super-exciting couple months and since the end of the season for me. It’s been busy going from different all-star game, from CGS (College Gridiron Showcase) to the Tropical (Bowl) to the Senior Bowl to Pro Day and getting the chance to interview with NFL teams and CFL teams through the back end of this process… every step of the journey has been exciting.

“For me, this is what you want as an athlete, especially as a Canadian quarterback,” he added. “These are the opportunities you dream of. It’s been a ton of fun. It’s definitely been busy but it’s been super exciting. It’s nice now to have situations I get to go compete in and I’m ready to take full advantage of them.”

Somewhere down the line — maybe next week or next month — Taylor Elgersma will get some clarity.…

[437
49,48,521,522,520,82
0":"post-384573","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-cfl","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-canadian-football-league","11":"tag-canadianfootballleague","12":"tag-cfl","13":"tag-sports
["GET
