The Superprestige series entered its latter stages Saturday at the seventh round in chilly, windy Gullegem, Belgium. Michael Vanthourenhout and Niels Vandeputte engaged in a snowy slugfest with series leader Vandeputte prevailing\u2013it was his first win of the season in the Big Three series. The two riders are locked together at top of the GC, only three points between them with one round to go.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day in the Junior men\u2019s race, Emilien Belzile delighted Canadian fans with a runner-up to Belgian Brent Lippens. Belzile\u2019s compatriots also had a great race: Evan Moore was fifth, Farland Lamont sixth and Grayson Franks seventh.<\/p>\n

The Overall Competition<\/p>\n

The series headed into its final quarter with close GC races in both the elite men\u2019s and women\u2019s sides. In Diegem<\/a>, Vanthourenhout saved his Superprestige campaign with a bold comeback after a start line crash. He sat two points behind Vandeputte, last year\u2019s GC champ. Tibor del Grosso had won the last two rounds, but he wasn\u2019t in Gullegem.<\/p>\n

Joris Nieuwenhuis claimed the hole shot on Lap 1. Vandeputte, who took it easy at Friday\u2019s Exact Cross round in order to throw down with Vanthourenhout, was on Nieuwenhuis\u2019s six. Vandeputte used the sand to take over. Vanthourenhout raced in fifth. Swiss champion Kevin Kuhn and Joran Wyseure, second in Diegem, were also prominent at the business end of the race. <\/p>\n

The series leader sifted down to fifth at the start of Lap 2. Nieuwenhuis was better leading through the sand on the second circuit. Vanthourenhout\u2019s teammate Gerben Kuypers distinguished himself by coming forward. Vandeputte was even further back. <\/p>\n

Kuypers was first over Lap 3\u2018s washboard, Wyseure marking him closely. But not closely enough. Kuypers pried out a gap and Verstrynge, Vandeputte and Vanthourenhout were in his wake. <\/p>\n

On Lap 4 of 8 Vandeputte powered the pursuit. Kuypers was the only fellow in the top 5 to not change his bike. Vanthourenhout cut across Vandeputte heading into the sand pit but Vandeputte insisted on leading. The snow started to swirl. Finally the chase found Kuypers.<\/p>\n

Vandeputte, Vanthourenhout, Wyseure, Kuypers and Nieuwenhuis comprised the elite quintet at the pointy end of the race on Lap 5. Kuypers was Tailgunner Charlie as Nieuwenhuis went to the front. The snow continued.<\/p>\n

Vanthourenhout seized the wheel to lead over the Lap 6 washboard and push the pace. A Nieuwenhuis mistake in a rut delayed Vandeputte. Vanthourenhout and Wyseure were loose. Kuypers bouncing off the barriers was more consequential than the Nieuwenhuis-Vandeputte incident.<\/p>\n

The group was now down to a quartet heading into the penultimate lap. Nieuwenhuis and Vandeputte hopped on clean machines, giving Vanthourenhout the opportunity to hammer. The Gullegem Four was spread out over the mud. Vandeputte turned himself inside out to shadow Vanthourenhout, ensuring that the gap was negligible when they heard the bell. <\/p>\n

Wyseure put himself back in the picture on the bell lap. Vanthourenhout kept the front and put bike lengths between himself and the series leader. In a tricky corner Vandeputte ran past Vanthourenhout but he couldn\u2019t hold on. Finally, a slight delay in his rival\u2019s progreee put Vandeputte in the driver\u2019s seat. Nieuwenhuis squeezed out Wyseure for the final podium spot. <\/p>\n

The last round of the series in February 7 in Middelkerke.<\/p>\n
