\n\tContrary to popular belief at the time, comic-cum-actor Eddie Murphy<\/a> didn\u2019t leave the 2007 Oscars<\/a> hall early after losing out on a Best Supporting Actor statuette because he was a sore loser; rather, the Dreamgirls<\/a> star recently revealed he departed because he didn\u2019t want to be the target of pity all night.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat happened was I was at the Oscars, I had lost, and then people kept coming over to me and kept [patting] me on the shoulder,\u201d Murphy told Entertainment Weekly<\/a> in a new interview while discussing his Netflix documentary\u00a0Being Eddie.\u00a0\u201cClint Eastwood came and rubbed my shoulder. And I was like, \u2018Oh, no, no, I\u2019m not gonna be this guy all night. Let\u2019s just leave.\u2019 I didn\u2019t storm out. I was like, \u2018I\u2019m not gonna be the sympathy guy all night.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Saturday Night Live alum played James (Jimmy) \u201cThunder\u201d Early in the Bill Condon written-directed musical drama \u00e0 clef, a troubled R&B-soul singer whose characterization is a mashup of early performers like Marvin Gaye and James Brown. The DreamWorks and Paramount movie, which takes inspiration from the \u201960s-founded Motown record label and its premier act The Supremes, featured an ensemble cast with Jamie Foxx,\u00a0Jennifer Hudson,\u00a0Beyonc\u00e9 Knowles,\u00a0Danny Glover,\u00a0Anika Noni Rose\u00a0and\u00a0Keith Robinson.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat year, Murphy was nominated against\u00a0Jackie Earle Haley for\u00a0Little Children,\u00a0Djimon Hounsou for\u00a0Blood Diamond, Mark Wahlberg for\u00a0The Departed and Alan Arkin\u00a0for\u00a0Little Miss Sunshine, who clinched the prize. After applauding the win, Murphy didn\u2019t stay to watch Hudson win her category (Best Supporting Actress) or to enjoy his costars\u2019 medley of the film\u2019s three Best Original Song nominees, resulting in speculation he was angered by his loss.<\/p>\n

\n\tMurphy recalled that he knew Arkin, who died in 2023, would win the coveted award because of his \u201chysterically funny\u201d performance: \u201c[Former DreamWorks CEO] Jeff Katzenberg invited me over to see\u00a0Little Miss Sunshine\u00a0six months before it came out in the theaters, and I literally watched the movie and I watched Alan \u2014 and I hadn\u2019t been nominated or anything yet \u2014 and I watched the movie and I turned to Jeff afterwards and I said, \u2018Now that performance right there is one of those performances that will steal somebody\u2019s Oscar.\u2019 I said those exact words. I was like, \u2018He could steal somebody\u2019s Oscar,\u2019 then he stole mine.\u201d<\/p>\n
