{"id":388707,"date":"2026-01-05T01:51:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T01:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/388707\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T01:51:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T01:51:07","slug":"collapse-of-zombie-uk-firms-forecast-to-fuel-unemployment-in-2026-unemployment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/388707\/","title":{"rendered":"Collapse of \u2018zombie\u2019 UK firms forecast to fuel unemployment in 2026 | Unemployment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The UK is poised for a rise in unemployment in 2026 fuelled by the collapse of \u201czombie\u201d companies that have struggled to adapt to a rise in business costs, according to a report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the start of what could be a pivotal year for the economy, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/resolution-foundation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Resolution Foundation<\/a> said businesses were grappling with a \u201ctriple whammy\u201d of multiyear increases in interest rates, energy prices and the minimum wage that could \u201cfinish off\u201d some underperforming companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Publishing its new year outlook report, the thinktank said 2026 had potential to be a \u201cturning point\u201d after decades of sluggish productivity growth \u2013 a key metric of output per hour of work which is vital for raising living standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, it warned this could involve a sharp rise in unemployment as more unproductive companies go bust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ruth Curtice, chief executive of the Resolution Foundation, said there were indications 2026 could be remembered as a \u201cturning point year\u201d by future economists and demographers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere are early and encouraging signs of a mild zombie apocalypse, where higher interest rates and minimum wages have combined to kill off struggling firms and leave the door open for new, more productive ones to replace them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBut while this is good news for our medium-term economic prospects, the short-term impact could be job displacement and higher unemployment. Policymakers will need to redouble efforts to address this problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Unemployment in the UK has reached the highest level outside the Covid pandemic in a decade, with the headline rate hitting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/dec\/16\/uk-unemployment-rise-high-budget-october-ons\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">5.1% in October<\/a> as employers held back on hiring before Rachel Reeves\u2019s autumn budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Business leaders have said tax increases and a rising living wage are among contributing factors deterring employers from taking on staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Experts have warned for several years that Britain has been held back by so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/jul\/11\/zombie-firms-uk-interest-rates-insolvency-begbies-traynor-profits\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">zombie firms<\/a>\u201d \u2013 companies which barely make enough money to cover their costs but just about stay in business \u2013 preventing the allocation of resources to more productive sectors of the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Economists have suggested that low interest rates in the years since the 2008 financial crisis contributed to this, as cheap borrowing costs helped debt-laden companies to stay afloat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Businesses have come under pressure from 14 consecutive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/bankofenglandgovernor\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bank of England<\/a> rate between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/dec\/16\/bank-of-england-raises-interest-rates-to-025\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">December 2021<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/aug\/03\/bank-of-england-raises-uk-interest-rate-to-fresh-15-year-high\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">August 2023<\/a>, designed to tackle inflation. While the Bank has since cut the base rate six times \u2013 from a peak of 5.25% to 3.75% \u2013 firms\u2019 operating costs remain higher than before the Covid pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a sign of the pressure, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) warned in a separate report that business confidence slumped to the lowest level in three years in the final quarter of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a survey of more than 4,600 firms carried out between 10 November and 8 December \u2013 straddling Reeves\u2019s 26 November budget \u2013 the lobby group found that tax was the biggest business concern, followed by inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Fewer than half (46%) of companies said they expected increased turnover over the next 12 months, while nearly a quarter (24%) expected a decrease. Only 19% had increased investment and 27% had scaled back plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">David Bharier, head of research at the BCC, said: \u201cOur data shows more clouds have gathered over business confidence, and the outlook for SMEs in 2026 is unsettled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Resolution Foundation said there were early signs that Britain\u2019s productivity growth was being boosted by \u201ccreative destruction\u201d, whereby newer and better firms, products or processes replace older, less-efficient, ones.
