{"id":388881,"date":"2026-01-05T03:58:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T03:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/388881\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T03:58:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T03:58:13","slug":"they-dont-have-a-nice-socket-structure-how-to-really-look-after-your-knees-health-wellbeing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/388881\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018They don\u2019t have a nice socket structure\u2019: how to really look after your knees | Health &#038; wellbeing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Of all the lower body joints, the knee is probably the one most likely to send you to the physiotherapist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt carries most of the weight of the body, and being a hinge joint, it means that it doesn\u2019t have a nice socket structure,\u201d says physiotherapist Dr Jillian Eyles, from the University of Sydney. \u201cIt relies on the ligaments and the joint capsules and the muscles around it to really stabilise the joint, and it\u2019s fairly easy to injure compared to another joint that\u2019s more supported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Knee injuries, and the associated increase in the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis, are a key reason why more than 53,000 knee replacement surgeries are performed each year in Australia, and that figure is expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safetyandquality.gov.au\/newsroom\/latest-news\/expert-advice-sidestep-surgery-knee-osteoarthritis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than double<\/a> by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Here\u2019s what experts say about how to keep your knees healthy and avoid becoming one of those surgical patients:<\/p>\n<p>Avoid injury<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Knee injury substantially increases the risk of knee osteoarthritis, and at a younger age. One of the most common serious knee injuries is a tear of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/acl-injury\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350738\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anterior cruciate ligament<\/a>, which crosses diagonally under the kneecap and connects the thigh bone to the shin bone \u2013 the same injury that took Matildas star striker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2025\/oct\/24\/sam-kerr-matildas-injury-recovery-dark-days\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Kerr<\/a> out of the game for over a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is possible to reduce the risk of knee injuries like this by warming up properly before activity, says physiotherapist Dr Kathryn Mills, from Kensington Physiotherapy and Macquarie University in Sydney. \u201cThat\u2019s not going for a run and stretch \u2013 it\u2019s doing a designed program that is designed to train both how your muscles are working, the extent to which they\u2019re working, and how your brain is turning on those muscles,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Warm-up activities recommended for preventing ACL injuries include squats, walking lunges, running with high knees, and side-to-side jumps and hops.<\/p>\n<p>Maintain healthy weight<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The knee is one of the key load-bearing joints of the body, so the greater the load on that joint, the greater the risk of damage over its lifespan. \u201cIf you think about how many steps a day someone walks, [that] accumulates over the course of their life, if you\u2019re putting a lot of load on those joints \u2013 which can come from body weight \u2013 that can be a contributor,\u201d says Prof Rana Hinman, a research physiotherapist at the University of Melbourne. She recommends maintaining a healthy weight for healthy knee joints, both to reduce load and reduce inflammation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.racgp.org.au\/ajgp\/2024\/december\/evaluating-the-role-of-weight-loss-in-symptomatic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strong evidence<\/a> that in people who are overweight and have knee pain, losing just a small percentage of body weight can significantly reduce their pain and osteoarthritis symptoms, Eyles says.<\/p>\n<p>Keep active<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One of the best ways to keep the knees healthy is to keep them moving, says Natalie Collins, an APA sports &amp; exercise physiotherapist and associate professor at the University of Queensland. She advises about 150 minutes of at least moderate physical activity each week, \u201cbut also really importantly, building in some resistance training as well, twice a week, where you\u2019re really getting your muscles to have the capacity to do all of the things you need to do in your day, like squat down, go up and down stairs, maybe play sport or run,\u201d Collins says.<\/p>\n<p>Warming up properly, doing exercises such as leg curls and gradually introducing higher levels of activity over time can help keep your knees in good condition. Photograph: Oranuch Binmohamet\/Alamy<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Simple exercises like doing squats or lunges, or standing up from a chair repeatedly are good starting points. If you do have access to gym equipment, she recommends leg extensions \u2013 where you straighten your leg from a bent position with the weight on top of your ankle \u2013 or leg curls where you lie face down and bend your lower leg up against a weight or resistance band, both of which work the quad and hamstring muscles.<\/p>\n<p>Ease into activity<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During Covid lockdowns, many people dealt with cabin fever and gym closures by enthusiastically taking up a new outdoor activity such as running.
