Carmen Mandato / Getty Images

With uncertainty surrounding their starting rotation to begin the season, the New York Yankees are talking to the Miami Marlins about a potential trade for starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, league sources told The Athletic.

Cabrera, 27, is under team control through the 2028 season and is projected to earn $3.7 million in arbitration this year, according to MLB Trade Rumors. As of Sunday morning, no deal was close.

With discussions around the game picking up with the start of the new year, the Yankees have continued talking to numerous teams and agents, signaling their desire to add at least one more starting pitcher to the mix. They have also continued to discuss Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta, who is making $8 million in his final year before free agency.

The Yankees need to add another starting pitcher with their depth in peril, as Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón and Clarke Schmidt will all be unavailable to begin the season as they continue their recoveries from elbow surgeries.

Cabrera had a 3.53 ERA in a career-high 137 2/3 innings last season but made two appearances on the injured list, first at the start of the season with a right middle finger blister, then in September with a sprained right elbow. He was also on the injured list twice in the first half of 2024 with a right shoulder impingement.

If a deal were to materialize between the two clubs, it would be the latest between the Yankees and their most active trade partner in recent years. The Yankees have executed two trades in the past two years with the Marlins, adding infielders Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Jon Berti. They’ve also previously discussed Sandy Alcantara’s availability. Marlins director of player development Rachel Balkovec knows the Yankees’ minor-league system well after spending four years with the organization, including managing the club’s Low-A affiliate, the Tampa Tarpons.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters at last month’s Winter Meetings that he would “love” to add another starting pitcher before the start of the season. The team’s latest interest in Cabrera would indicate that the Yankees are trying to accelerate their offseason after what’s been a dormant start for the American League contender.

Edward Cabrera had a 3.53 ERA and 150 strikeouts over 137 2/3 innings in 2025.
