SEATTLE \u2014 Seattle reliever Trent Thornton was injured while coming off the mound on a ground ball in the ninth inning Thursday night and was carted off the field during the\u00a0Mariners’ 6-0 win\u00a0over the Texas Rangers.<\/p>\n
Thornton was using crutches to get around the Mariners\u2019 locker room after the game and the team did not have an official diagnosis of the lower left leg injury he sustained\u00a0on the grounder hit by Adolis Garcia with two outs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Thornton said he feared it was a significant Achilles injury and that he would have an MRI on Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s probably the Achilles, but that\u2019s just speculation, so I\u2019ll find out tomorrow,\u201d Thornton said. \u201cVery frustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thornton entered the game to start the eighth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. The right-hander then had a full count on Garcia before the righty hitter hit a grounder on his 95 m.p.h. fastball on the lower outside corner.<\/p>\n
\u201cI threw the pitch, and as soon as I turned, I thought I broke the guy\u2019s bat and it hit me in the back of the leg, and I fell,\u201d Thornton said.<\/p>\n
Thornton said his first reaction at that point was to try to look at his leg to see what had happened.<\/p>\n
\u201cI tried to get up and just couldn\u2019t even put pressure on it at all,\u201d Thornton said. \u201cIt didn\u2019t hurt. It\u2019s just achy and numb. But I guess I don\u2019t know. I\u2019m still trying to process this a little bit, and I\u2019ll find out more tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mariners manager Dan Wilson said he thought Thornton pitched \u201cfabulous\u201d before the injury.<\/p>\n
