{"id":391324,"date":"2026-01-06T08:12:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T08:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/391324\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T08:12:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T08:12:09","slug":"medvedev-i-was-always-for-the-ptpa-because-the-atp-are-a-monopoly-in-the-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/391324\/","title":{"rendered":"Medvedev : \u201cI was always for the PTPA because the ATP are a monopoly in the sport\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Top seed and world No. 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennismajors.com\/atp\/daniil-medvedev-andrei-medvedev-wife-bear-10-questions-you-may-ask-about-the-russian-79964.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daniil Medvedev<\/a> described <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennismajors.com\/atp\/djokovic-severs-ties-with-ptpa-in-major-blow-to-player-union-840461.html\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"840461\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Novak Djokovic\u2019s sudden withdrawal<\/a> from the Professional Tennis Players Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/ptpaplayers.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PTPA<\/a>) as a \u201cbad look\u201d for the organisation, as internal fissures within player representation come to light ahead of the Australian Open.<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic, a co-founder of the PTPA, announced his departure on Sunday citing concerns over \u201ctransparency and governance,\u201d a move that has sent shockwaves through the tour. Medvedev, speaking after his 6-2, 6-3 opening-round victory over Marton Fucsovics, admitted the split was damaging to the group\u2019s image.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is kind of a bad look on PTPA, because he was a co-founder,\u201d Medvedev told reporters on Monday. \u201cI was always for the PTPA because I do think the ATP can improve some things and they are a monopoly in the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medvedev : \u201cnot for it, not against it\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This word is a direct echoes of the core legal argument in the PTPA\u2019s ongoing antitrust litigation against the ATP and WTA. Medvedev, who is not a formal member or plaintiff in the lawsuit, is effectively validating the \u201clegal lexicon\u201d of the association at a time when its future is being questioned.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian remains supportive of an independent voice for players but doesn\u2019t feel ready to commit more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know my priorities and, for example, I was never involved as a decision-maker in PTPA, but I always said I think it\u2019s good, even if we have maybe more parties trying to not even change something in tennis but trying to look into tennis if there are some things to change. So that\u2019s kind of it. I\u2019m not for it, not against it.
