He shared some key insights on what hip osteoarthritis is, the key symptoms to look out for and suggested some exercises to try.

What is hip osteoarthritis?

“Hip osteoarthritis is a condition in the hip that is multifaceted in how it develops, but essentially it is a process that causes a reduction in joint space, subsequently leading to progressive pain and dysfunction,” explains Gem. “It used to be just referred to as wear and tear but as we understand more we know that this is not the sole cause.”

What are the main symptoms?

“The main symptom is often pain in the groin which can spread and manifest or refer into the thigh and as far as the knee,” explains Gem. “Alongside the pain, people often find they lose range of movement. For example, they can’t sit cross-legged, put shoes and socks on or even wash their feet or cut their toenails.”

As symptoms and pain worsen, often these functional impairments get worse.

“It has a tremendous impact on quality of life and mental health for those that have worse stage levels due to severe pain and loss of hip function,” says Gem. “As a result it can have a severe impact of emotional wellbeing. When quality of life is poor I would suggest seeking an opinion from an orthopaedic consultant.”

What are the risk factors?

While the exact cause of osteoarthritis is not known, there are several factors that can increase your risk of developing this condition.

“For example, increase joint wear can increase risk and is common when someone is obese as greater forces are put through their joints,” explains Gem. “Sportspeople are also at some risk (dependent on their type of sport) and certain occupations have higher prevalence rates such as farmers, physical workers and people in the military.”

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome and hip dysplasia are known predisposing conditions that can increase the risk of developing hip arthritis, adds the hip specialist.

What are some effective pain management strategies for hip osteoarthritis?

“Exercise and pain relief is often the first port of call,” says Gem. “Having correct support from a physio is imperative to enable the individual to have a strategy to help manage their pain. Physios can also help patients understand what they are able to do.

“Exercises can help someone become more functionally able, improving both physical and physiological resilience where possible.”

Here are some exercises that could help…

Single leg balance

“Stand near a wall or sturdy surface, in case you need support, and shift your weight onto one leg,” instructs Gem. “Slowly lift the other foot a few inches off the ground and keep your standing knee soft, not locked.

“Try to stay balanced for 10 to 30 seconds and then lower your foot down and switch to the other leg. Repeat two to three times on each side.”

The hip physio explains that this is simple but effective exercise.

“It helps load up some of the gluteal muscles that help with balance and stability, which can be an issue for someone with worsening osteoarthritis,” says Gem.

Bridges on your back

“Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor hip width apart, and keep your arms relaxed by your sides with palms facing down,” instructs Gem. “Press your heels into the ground and slowly lift your hips up towards the ceiling.

“Squeeze your glutes at the top and hold for two to three seconds and then lower your hips slowly back down to the floor with control.”

Repeat this exercise for 10 to 15 repetitions.

“This simple bum lift exercise can be used to fire up gluteal muscles with low risk at irritating symptoms,” says Gem.

Banded hip abductions

“Place a resistance band just above your knees and sit on a chair or lie on your back with your knees bent,” says Gem. “With your feet together, gently push your knees apart against the band. Keep the movement small and controlled.

“Hold for two seconds at the widest point, then slowly return to the start and repeat for 12 to 15 repetitions. This exercise is good for the lateral hip muscles.”

When doing exercises with osteoarthritis, it’s important to listen to your pain levels. These exercises should get easier over time and with regular practice can help to improve movement in the hip.

However, the NHS Inform website recommends stopping exercises if they make your symptoms worse or if they cause new excessive pain.

Your support helps us to tell the story From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The…

[37
49,48,407,84
0":"post-39213","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-fitness","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-fitness","11":"tag-health
["GET
