The film will be based on the second of Freida McFadden\u2019s bestselling trilogy of books. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Housemaid\u201d has been a hit at the holiday box office, grossing more than $75 million and $133 million worldwide in 17 days of release. The psychological thriller directed by Paul Feig cost a modest $35 million to make. <\/p>\n<p>Lionsgate said \u201cThe Housemaid\u2019s Secret\u201d is being developed with the aim of Feig and Sweeney returning, including Sweeney as an executive producer. \u201cThe Housemaid\u201d screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine is writing the sequel. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly \u2014 and audibly \u2014 to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next,\u201d said Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman, in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Housemaid\u201d has handed Sweeney a major box-office victory after <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/box-office-predator-badlands-cdf57703df0ebb3e72a0309893cf5f6f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a disappointing result<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sydney-sweeney-tiff-christy-martin-ea61f200563ec442587e9f7447c9a6a2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">her awards-hopeful boxing drama \u201cChristy\u201d<\/a> in November. That film grossed only $2 million worldwide.
