\n\tBen Affleck<\/a> appeared on \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d amid his press tour for Netflix\u2019s \u201cThe Rip\u201d and looked back on the \u201cmassive embarrassment\u201d of being snubbed at the Oscars<\/a> for best director with \u201cArgo<\/a>.\u201d Affleck was a frontrunner to land a nom. He won best director honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards and BAFTAs. Alas, Affleck was snubbed while \u201cArgo\u201d went on to earn seven Oscar nominations and win best picture and two other prizes.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was the year, the horrible thing of everyone telling you, \u2018You\u2019re gonna get nominated, you\u2019re gonna get nominated for director,\u2019\u201d Affleck remembered. \u201cAnd so, of course, I wake up that morning, and sure enough \u2014 and, by the way, it\u2019s not [unlike] any other morning that I had not been nominated for best director. But all of a sudden, it\u2019s a massive embarrassment. I woke up and people [said], \u2018You didn\u2019t get nominated.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAffleck\u2019s story reminded Kimmel of being at the Critics Choice Awards the night prior, where \u201cOnce Battle After Another\u201d picked up major honors for best picture, director and adapted screenplay but left leading man Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a> shut out for best actor (which went to Timothee Chalamet for \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was thinking, boy, he\u2019s got so many better places to be,\u201d Kimmel quipped about DiCaprio. \u201cAnd the movie wins best picture. The director\u00a0Paul Thomas Anderson\u00a0wins best director, and then he doesn\u2019t win. And I\u2019m thinking he must be so pissed that [he had to leave] whatever he got airlifted from \u2014 a yacht somewhere \u2014\u00a0and couldn\u2019t be there anymore. He came to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is maybe the worst award-show situation ever,\u201d Kimmel continued. \u201cI think you\u2019re underselling this. Because\u00a0\u2018Argo,\u2019 not only was it nominated for the Oscar for best picture, you\u00a0won\u00a0best picture. You starred in it and directed it, and you were not nominated in either category \u2026 it\u2019s as if the movie directed itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s sort of what it felt like,\u201d Affleck replied. \u201cThe day of the snub, which all of a sudden it\u2019s a negative event and a horrible thing, I had to go to the Critics Choice Awards. I remember getting there and there\u2019s a red carpet line, like 500 people dying to talk to me, and every single one of them was like, \u2018Hi! So the snub\u2026\u2019 What do you say to that? \u2018It\u2019s a bummer!\u2019 I did end up winning the Critics Choice Award.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s just embarrassing,\u201d Affleck added. \u201cI wasn\u2019t the one going out there being like, \u201cI\u2019m going to be nominated!\u2019 It\u2019s having to be put through the ritual of then answering for why you didn\u2019t get nominated. I didn\u2019t say I was [going to be]!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSomeone who can relate to what Affleck is talking about is Bradley Cooper, who was similarly snubbed for best director with \u201cA Star Is Born\u201d despite landing nominations from the Golden Globes, Critics\u2019 Choice Awards and Directors Guild of America. Cooper also said the snub was \u201cembarrassing.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe first thing I felt was embarrassment, actually. Think about it. I felt embarrassed that I didn\u2019t do my part,\u201d Cooper told Oprah in 2019.<\/a> \u201cEven if I got the nomination, it should not give me any sense of whether I did my job or not. That\u2019s the trick, to make something that you believe in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCooper explained that did not set out to make a movie that landed Academy Award nominations, adding: \u201cThe only thing I set out to do was to tap into as an authentic place as possible. [An authentic place] in myself and everybody I asked to make this movie \u2014 to tell a human story of people who are going to deal with their family life, trauma as a child, addiction in a real way, love in this life and finding your voice.\u201d<\/p>\n
