Jennifer Lopez\u2019s<\/a> highly anticipated residency<\/a> in Las Vegas recently came to an end, but not without renewed attacks from her critics who remain vocal in their opposition to how the pop star dresses.<\/p>\n

The \u201cJenny from the Block\u201d singer kicked off her \u201cUp All Night Live in Las Vegas\u201d residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Dec. 30, 2025, and performed the final show on Saturday. She\u2019s set to return to the Colosseum with several dates in March.<\/p>\n

While many fans of Lopez across social media celebrated her recent Las Vegas performances and her looks onstage, some critics online took the opportunity to level all-too-familiar digs at the singer and actor: that the 56-year-old performer \u2015 whose Las Vegas costumes included bodysuits, bikinis and sheer catsuits \u2015 was apparently not dressing for her age … whatever that means.<\/p>\n

People on X chided Lopez for not<\/a>\u00a0having \u201cclass,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0saying her onstage style is \u201cinappropriate\u201d<\/a>for a woman her age.<\/a><\/p>\n

Lopez has long faced scrutiny for how she dresses. Last July, right-wing pundit\u00a0Megyn Kelly<\/a>ripped Lopez for wearing a thong bodysuit<\/a> during a performance onstage, calling Lopez a \u201csoft **** star\u201d during an episode of her podcast, \u201cThe Megyn Kelly Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s 55 years old, and she hasn\u2019t come to grips with the fact that she\u2019s not a *** symbol anymore,\u201d Kelly said at the time. She had also criticized Lopez the year prior, saying Lopez was \u201cpast her prime.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Lopez clapped back at the hate<\/a> she receives over her clothing choices during her residency in Las Vegas, saying at one point onstage<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cI do laugh at some of the things [people say online] sometimes, because they do say funny things, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2033\u2018Why is she always dressed that way? Why don\u2019t she dress her age?\u2019 \u2015 I\u2019m like, \u2018Huh?\u2019 \u2018Why\u2019s she always naked?\u2019\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I say, \u2019If you had this body, you\u2019d be naked, too!\u201d she added as the crowd cheered.<\/p>\n

Monica Cwynar<\/a>, a licensed clinical social worker with Thriveworks who specializes in trauma and coping skills, said that she believes the attacks against Lopez and how she chooses to dress are \u201crooted in societal perceptions of aging, particularly for women.\u201d<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s a reason behind it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany people hold ingrained beliefs about how women should physically present themselves as they age,\u201d Cwynar told HuffPost. \u201cPartly because of a perception that desirability should dwindle as we age.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt stems from the same place that people don\u2019t want to think of their parents or grandparents as ****** people,\u201d she continued. \u201cBecause of that, there is a cultural expectation that women should adopt more conservative or demure attire as they get older.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cwynar emphasized that Lopez is an entertainer and that her personal expression and her body autonomy is \u201chers to display how she sees fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWomen like Jennifer challenging those stereotypes can lead to backlash as it forces people to confront their own biases about age, femininity, and sexuality,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Societal norms have historically regulated women\u2019s bodies \u2014 but there are ways to push back against criticism about your choices.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHistorically, women\u2019s bodies have been objectified and regulated by societal norms, leading to a policing mentality regarding female sexuality,\u201d Cwynar said, adding that society has long asked women to dress in a way \u201cthat makes others feel more comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cwynar emphasized that there are societal double standards regarding the expectations for how celebrities should dress.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Brad Pitt, who is close in age to Jennifer Lopez, has his shirt off, no one seems to have a problem with that \u2014 in fact, it\u2019s likely to be celebrated,\u201d she said, adding, \u201cWe often allow men greater freedom in their self-expression.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Cwynar thought that Lopez\u2019s response to her critics was \u201cproof of her empowerment and agency\u201d and that the singer emphasized that she \u201cfinds joy in her body at 56, encouraging a more inclusive perspective on beauty standards.\u201d<\/p>\n

And for any woman navigating criticism about their choices as they age, Cwynar recommends that you embrace your individuality and ignore the noise.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecognize that value and beauty come in many forms and that self-confidence can be empowering and extremely sexy. Engaging in practices that promote body positivity can foster a greater sense of peace with oneself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Overall, Cwynar said that it\u2019s important to emphasize personal satisfaction over external validation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is your life and you need to live it in a way that makes you happy, so dress in whatever makes you feel great.\u201d<\/p>\n
