Deftones<\/a>\u2018 seminal album Around the Fur features some of the most iconic artwork of the \u201990s \u2014 a provocative image of a young woman in a jacuzzi, shot from a bizarre top-down, up-close perspective with a fisheye lens.<\/p>\n

In a new video feature, Jenkem<\/a> magazine set out to uncover the lore behind the sleeve image and its bikini-clad subject, Lisa Hughes, going as far as to track down the present-day Hughes, as well as catch up with the photographer behind the shot, Rick Kosick.<\/p>\n

As Kosick recalls in the clip, he was invited to shoot photos during the recording of Around the Fur in Seattle. There was no pressure to produce an album cover shot, only \u201cgo there and have fun, hang out, shoot photos.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were kind of in their party phase stage of the band \u2014 as you probably should be \u2014 and so we went back to their their condo that they rented during the recording of this record, and there was this girl hanging out in the jacuzzi,\u201d Kosick said (as transcribed by The PRP<\/a>). \u201cAnd I just went up and took a couple\u2026 two photos. That\u2019s it. Walked away.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cFew weeks later, I get a call from the label. \u2018Hey, come by and check this out. We want to show you something.\u2019 And the art director [Kevin Reagan], he was like, \u2018Well, what do you think?\u2019 I was like, \u2018Wow.\u2019 I was blown away. I was like, \u2018This is so cool looking. This looks\u2026 I love it\u2019 \u2014 of course, I\u2019m going to say I love it. It\u2019s my photo \u2014 but I was just really\u2026 looking back, I was just really excited because it felt right after all the mockups and everything, this one looks incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hughes also said she had no intentions of cover art fame and cleared up any misconceptions surrounding the photo, i.e. that she was a groupie.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found those articles, you know, about like [me allegedly] being a groupie and this and that,\u201d Hughes said. \u201cAnd I was like, maybe I should just start a little page just about myself and so people know that I\u2019m Lisa. I\u2019m just this awesome chick from Auburn, and I like to have fun. And there\u2019s no groupie action going on here. Just me having a kick-ass time, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

Regarding Kosick\u2019s iconic image, she added: \u201cIt\u2019s a pretty cool looking shot, right? Like with the fisheye lens just looking down. You know, it\u2019s kind of risqu\u00e9 a little bit with my breasts, and people have asked, \u2018Oh, look, you got a pimple there.\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018Who gives a sh*t?\u2019 What does that really matter?\u2019 I\u2019m a human being. I\u2019m not a model and I could care less really. That\u2019s me. It\u2019s just cool looking.
