TORONTO \u2014 Mae Martin says they\u2019re grateful Canada has reached a point where queer stories no longer have to live in the margins.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a shift underscored by the Toronto-born comedian\u2019s Netflix thriller \u201cWayward\u201d earning a GLAAD Media Award nomination for outstanding limited series on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thrilled. It\u2019s always nice to be recognized within your community,\u201d says Martin, who is non-binary.<\/p>\n

The GLAAD Awards honour film, TV, music and other media that offer fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n

Martin\u2019s podcast, \u201cHandsome,\u201d also got a nod for outstanding podcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cWayward\u201d stars Martin as a trans cop who investigates a shady reform school for troubled teens in the unsettlingly idyllic town of Tall Pines. <\/p>\n

The comedian says the series \u2014 which they created and co-wrote \u2014 treats their character\u2019s queer identity as part of who they are, rather than the focus of the story.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tried to sort of sneakily break down some barriers by not overtly talking about some of those things. And I think we managed to sneak into the minds of some people,\u201d says Martin during an interview in Toronto.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m being really inarticulate. Basically, I\u2019m thrilled I\u2019m able to go to the awards show and wear a suit and look at all the celebs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other Canadian nominees include \u201cCactus Pears,\u201d a co-production of Canada, India and the U.K., and \u201cThe Queen of My Dreams,\u201d the debut feature by Canadian filmmaker Fawzia Mirza, both in the category for outstanding film with a limited release.<\/p>\n

Canadian series \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d also earned a GLAAD nod for outstanding new TV series. The hit Crave show, which airs on HBO Max in the U.S., follows two duelling male hockey players who engage in a secret romance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just love how it feels like in Canada, you can do a queer story without being relegated to a fringe or marginal pocket of the industry. It can be just a story about being a person,\u201d says Martin, reflecting on the nods.<\/p>\n

While Martin hasn\u2019t yet watched \u201cHeated Rivalry,\u201d they say they can\u2019t wait to.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone says it\u2019s so hot and great and dramatic and about secret, forbidden love. But also, when you\u2019ve lived that, when you have been in secret relationships, it might be triggering too,\u201d says Martin.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s about hot hockey boys, so I\u2019m going to love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 37th annual GLAAD Media Awards will be held in Los Angeles on March 5.<\/p>\n
