{"id":39619,"date":"2025-08-01T15:16:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T15:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/39619\/"},"modified":"2025-08-01T15:16:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T15:16:07","slug":"albertas-forever-canadian-gets-green-light-for-petition-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/39619\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta&#8217;s Forever Canadian gets green light for petition question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A pro-Canadian group has been given the green light to collect signatures to keep\u00a0 Alberta in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta Forever Canada said its petition is a way for Albertans to \u201ceasily express their pride in Alberta and loyalty to Canada,\u201d said Ken Chapman, a retired lawyer and founder of \u201cReboot Alberta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to provide a truthful counter-narrative to the disinformation of the Alberta Prosperity Project [APP].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The APP is pushing the province to hold a referendum on separation next year. It said it is acting on deep dissatisfaction among voters with the way Alberta is viewed and treated in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Its proposed ballot question was recently sent to a judge for approval.<\/p>\n<p>It asks: \u201cDo you agree that the Province of Alberta shall become a Sovereign Country and cease to be a province in Canada?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.ab.ca\/citizen-initiative-petition-issued\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alberta Forever Canada petition asks<\/a>: \u201cDo you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It requires 293,976 (10 per cent of eligible voters) signatures by Oct. 28, according to rules set by Elections Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>Chapman pointed out that the APP\u2019s plan threatens treaties with First Nations in Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe respect for the treaty obligations is non-existent in the separatist rhetoric,\u201d Chapman said. \u201cWe recognize the significance of the treaties as agreements between sovereign nations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlberta shouldn\u2019t be allowed to separate without the prior agreement of all impacted First Nations and totally binding replacement of all\u00a0Treaty obligations with the independent Alberta entity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read More:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptnnews.ca\/national-news\/alberta-court-to-decide-whether-citizen-led-separation-question-is-valid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alberta court to decide whether\u00a0 citizen-led separation question is valid\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chapman said that negotiation would have to include the government of Canada to ensure the replacement agreement is comprehensive and the obligations are clarified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the common law that has been\u00a0developed through treaty right litigation decisions must also be assumed by the new independent Alberta.
